He seems confused...
"If the council do not want cars in the city, then they should ... not try to discourage drivers as seems to be the case now."
Of course he is confused. The standard driver fog-bank of self centred, want it now, stupidity and/or rage.
It's been like that for decades in Bath - at least since the mid 70s when I moved there. Not a bad idea - make driving your own car into the centre difficult as a disincentive, but you can get in if you need to.
A place that size is better to walk around or take an open top bus. What would he do in Venice - moan that the roads seem a bit wet?
Wouldn't paving the lot encourage motorists?
Thoughts and prayers for the elderly drivers who it seems are simultaneously perefectly fine to drive 1.5 tonne of car, but don't have the mental or physical dexterity to use an app to park it.

To be fair, some of those parking machines are terrible. I got stuck the other day when a parking machine was asking for the last three digits of the number plate, but Mrs HawkinsPeter's car only has two. Turns out it meant the last three letters.
I think we've all had our moments with parking machines, be it that it's unfamiliar, we're in a mood or it is actually malfunctioning/ instructions are unclear.
But I think there's a distinction between being a bit inconvenienced, and those oh so competent drivers who claim to be be completely unable to get to grips with Ringo and the like.
Family 'taken aback' by amount of parking fines at Fantasy Island
"Meters do not automatically calculate length of stay" - drivers be like "oh, I assumed they did".

"You can pay for parking via cash, card or online any time before you exit the car park on the day of your visit.
The charges are as followed throughout the year:
£2 an hour
£4 for 2 hours
£6 all day
Since installation [of ANPR], the misuse associated with the car parks has declined immensely."
Not sure I've understood the entry pricing, but it seems like it's free to go in, but each adult needs a (typically) £20 wristband to go on the rides, bowling etc.
It's just one try-on after another, drivers.
Cornish tin miner blasts ‘excessive’ charge for ‘unavoidable’ parking blunder on Lizard peninsula
The former Geevor tin miner has used the car park plenty of times through his life without trouble

As anyone who has ever been punishment-passed for causing a motorist a delay of 30 seconds will know, it's entirely possible that his delay of 23 minutes for a call of nature and waiting for someone else to manoeuvre was not accompanied by an attack of biblical rage.
However... I have a modicum of sympathy. In the old days when car parks were patrolled by people, you'd never have been ticketed while you waited to exit. With ANPR, the click is ticking until you leave the site entirely.
Yes, I remember parking attendants:
Outrage as parking attendants 'stand and watch' people park before handing out tickets
“What is even worse is parking attendants stood and watched people park, get out and head off and then fined them when it was clear they didn’t know."
Cheshire East Council says it is looking into complaints

That's a slightly different context - according to the article they were fined despite paying for their parking. The car park was notionally "closed", yet still physically open for business and accepting payment. If the car park was supposed to be out of use to I'd expect it to be made obvious (with the facility to pay disabled) not used for covert entrapment.
Sorry. Best I could come up with out of this week's news.
I think it's safe to assume the vast majority of the 23 minutes was for his wifes call of nature, this is clearly time he was still parked and should be paid for, while the feeble excuse of delayed leaving th car park due to another road user was unlikely to be more than two minutes, but we will sling some mud around and see what sticks.
from the artical, he had paid for parking until 4:33, at 4:30 they got to the car, but decided to leave it in the car park while his wife used the facilities (were they in the car park?). It's hard to believe that he was trying to exit the car park for 23 minutes while being delayed by another car, without going totally batshit.
Was it "Jelly", "Blancmange" or "Terrine"....and why was he doing it in Cornwall?
Cancer patient slapped with 'unfair' parking fine 'spoiling' Commonwealth Games T20 Cricket experience
Several drivers were hit with fines but claimed signage was inadequate near Edgbaston Stadium
There's some missing information here. Starting to get a bit Conan Doyle here, but "Watson, look up 7 August 2022 on that calendar. What day was it?"
"Upon my soul, Holmes, it was a Sunday"
"And what do we already know from Google Maps About the single yellows on the west side of Amesbury Road?"
"They only operate Monday to Friday, you can see it on every lamp post"
"And the eastern side?"
"The article doesn't say anything about which side of the road."
https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/midlands-news/cancer-patient-slapp...
I wouldn't take the yellows into account in this instance as they did have lots of temp restrictions in place during the CWG, especially around packed venues like Edgbaston Ground and the main stadium.
They mention a sign that was not there when they went back. I wonder why being as they watched the final and then the games were finished.
Maybe they should have looked here instead. (page 5)
Edit: Just wanted to mention that any ticket for any event at the games meant free public transport in the Midlands area AND venues like Edgbaston had specific shuttle buses from various park and ride venues. So they didn't need to try and park so close.
Edgbaston is on many bus routes, and as I remember the No1.
Just opposite is an entrance to Canon Hill park, where I used to join the NCN5.
Not everyone can use buses. Now go and copy out 100 pages of the Mavic Tech manual.
non-story/ much ado about nothing klaxon, but always curious how anything car-related escalates so very quickly...
Lincolnshire pensioner 'ready to risk criminal record' in parking row over minor typo

council are passing 'round the pipe of peace here: "Once the individual contacts the council, we will be able to cancel the penalty charge notice and apologise for failure to carry out our usual process on this occasion."

Maybe all parking meters could be designed to be so challenging to operate correctly, that they require a level of mental agility similar to driving a car.
Fail the observation test on the parking meter?
Didn't react in time when asked to press a button within 3 seconds?
Can't read the 4 digit code printed on the lamppost 20 metres up the street?
I'll swap you a PCN for your driving licence!
Would prefer some kind of intelligence/fitness test at the pumps.

Man blasts hospital car park waiting times as an 'absolute joke'
"There were queues to get in and queues to get out"

Instant 'not everyone can use a bus' from this driver; funny how they're always good to drive:
"Many other members of the community hit back to remind Mr Hooper that there is a free Park and Ride service, designed to reduce the amount of traffic overflow in the hospital car parks and offer an alternative solution to driving into the hospital directly. However, "not everybody can use it", says Mr Hooper.
"If you're someone who's physically disabled, or perhaps you're frail and require assistance to get on and off buses, the Park and Ride isn't a viable option - it's simply not available for every single person who uses the hospital."
He admitted he wasn't previously aware of the Park and Ride service, but stated that "there were lots of others who didn't seem to know about it either".
NHS workers forced to pay £12 a day to park for work in Taunton
Man sets himself up as a mini rentmydrive.com in new twist on old chestnut.
24h visitor parking there is £12.80, my guess is that staff parking is a lot less and it sounds like there aren't enough spaces to go around anyway.

Dad's anger over £100 fine after wife failed to 'park within marking' during family emergency
"A £100 fine seems ludicrous in normal circumstances not to mention at the moment with the cost of living"
But the MEN comment column is a tough crowd and I agree with them. The fine was £60 if paid promptly - and BTW stick to one story.

Kid has panic attack so best thing to do is go in a shop for 10 min!! Seriously.
Drivers - it's always this puerile "they're out to get me" vibe and it's "victory" (for the hard-pressed, of course) when they get out of a charge or penalty.

So in a car park you use regularly, you see nothing at all odd in a pole position space being vacant?
Can't find this location on a map, and it doesn't look like a grade 1 listed sort of spot, but my guess is the Bath is the sort of place that tries to control the signage paraphernalia that comes with cars, hence this admittedly titchy stud.
Finally: "Have you been given a parking ticket you thought was unfair? Email imogen.mcguckin [at] reachplc.com to get in touch." More on this soon?
