"Karma at its finest": Impatient cyclist tries to push another popping a wheelie out of the way... and lands flat on his face

Whatever your thoughts on groups of youths using cycle lanes to pull stunts, this is definitely not how to attempt an overtake

A London cyclist who tried to shove another wheelie-popping rider out of the way as he attempted to overtake got what many are describing as "instant karma", as the wheelie cyclist managed to keep his balance and the one on two wheels came off rather worse...

Shared on Instagram by oneway.bradd, a disagreement of some sort can be heard when the footage begins, before the wheelie cyclist strays into the path of an overtaking rider, wearing a blue helmet and on a hybrid bike.

While it's not clear what happened in the build-up – and it's not clear if the wheelie cyclist was aware of the approaching cyclist behind him – what happened next is probably a lesson to us all in how to ride calmly and patiently when using segregated cycling infrastructure.

Amongst the insults and analyses with frutier language than we'd care to share in this article, one of the more measured commenters said: "This person doing the wheelie would be annoying for sure but there’s no need to turn aggressive on him. People are so aggressive these days, motorists and cyclists alike. There’s no need for such behaviour."

Replying to criticism of his riding and accusations he was "blocking the lane", the wheelie-popping cyclist who was shoved, who goes by the name jrzy_nojus on Instagram, said: "That made no sense I didn’t ride in front of him I turned and he pushed me."

Youngsters pulling stunts on bikes in urban areas isn't a new thing, and has on some occasions caused mini spates of moral panic, but in recent years the riding of mostly urban and BMX bikes en masse has started to gain some further traction, and has even been encouraged by the Met Police in London.

Responding to anti-social behaviour complaints about youths 'bike storming' and skating in the Square Mile last year, the Met said youths are welcome to practise their hobbies in this "relatively safe environment".

The Bikestormz event – an annual mass ride in London where riders have been shown weaving in and out of traffic with thousands taking part – has gained the support of London's mayor Sadiq Khan and the Met in the past, and in part is meant as a protest against knife crime.

You're the guy who was previously banned as "Cyclist against the bullshit said by other cyclists" or something like that, aren't you? Same stupid opinions, same "look at me I'm hard" attitude, same lying stories.

Mods, you really should block the IP address rather than just closing the account! (Though I accept some of these trolls probably use multiple addresses or VPNs)

So basically these cyclists were riding two abreast and there was no room for the bus behind them to overtake safely?

Apart from the wheelies it sounds like they had the right idea.

So you're pretty much holding up your hands to assault.

Got to admit I've done it myself a couple of years ago. Couple of scrotes pulling wheelies side by side on a main road and deliberately holding up the bus that was behind them beeping and the 20 odd cars behind that , and they knew what they was doing because they were laughing and shouting F**k off every time they were beeped. So I did what that guy done and came alongside them.and basically booted one ferel scrote into the other and they both went down , however I didnt and even got shouts of thanks mate as traffic passed me. When scrotes like those are purposely going out their way to block traffic and other cyclists , sometimes the best karma is when you can stop them and get it right whilst assisting your fellow road users to go about their business.

So, let me get this right - you deliberately caused two cyclists to crash directly in front of moving traffic? Either you're a grade A twat or a fucking liar. I know which one my money is on. 🙄

Come now, I don't think we have to go either/or in this equation, whether it actually happened or not they are definitely both.

To me it looked like the kid knew he was there but I couldn't make out the audio.  Did he say something to provoke the kid? But the bigger question is why did the bully go for it, even if he hadn't done anything, kids sometimes do things like that (its called growing up) there was no need for the shove/overtake  7

Does look like the wheelie kid was intentionally blocking the path, that said if you can't overtake safely you shouldn't overtake.
Worth noting the unused road next to them.

The kid looks over his shoulder and then deliberately moves into the path of the overtaking cyclist. However, that doesn't excuse the shove by the overtaking cyclist, which looks more offensive than defensive.

My tuppence-worth, a kid having fun on a bike in a safe environment, bullying grownup with every opportunity to slow down, call out, and/or take evasive action tries to power through and deliberately pushes a child, amusingly getting his just deserts. Should count himself very lucky he didn't drive the kid to fall into the wall and cause serious injury, in which case he could be facing life-changing assault charges. Even if you think the kid's an "idiot" or an "oik" as some below have said, that doesn't give anyone the right to put another rider at risk of potential serious injury.

We get a lot of kids doing this round my neighbourhood, they have amazing skills but yes, occasionally they will wander off the straight; I just give them a shout that I'm coming through and slow down if necessary, I've never had a single one not get out of my way as soon as they can and we usually exchange a few friendly words with me complimenting them on their skills as I pass. If I thought that as a tall and powerful fully grown man I had a right to push kids off their bikes just because they were delaying me slightly I would hope that (actually I know that) my mates and wife would have a serious word with me about my attitude.

Yep, bullying adult gets cumuppance but at least he was sensible enough to be wearing a helmet.

sounds to me like there was some verbal communication between them (we only hear the end of it.

" I just give them a shout that I'm coming through and slow down if necessary, I've never had a single one not get out of my way as soon as they can"

Except he didn't get out the way he moved to the right where the other rider was already overtaking.

Two things on that (and obviously none of us can be certain from the available evidence): the altercation seems to be between the camera person and the adult, I can't hear the wheelie kid saying anything, and looking over one's shoulder tends to cause a natural shift to the right which I assume would be greatly exacerbated when pulling a wheelie (I wouldn't know, I'm so crap at them I wouldn't dare look behind whilst pulling one). Your interpretation is just as valid as mine, however whether you think the kid is a provocative little scrote deliberately messing others about or just a lad having a harmless laugh and enjoying experimenting with his skills, the fact remains that if bullyboy had shown a little restraint, instead of going whanging aggressively into the situation, the incident need not have happened at all.

From the vid it doesn't look as if he's trying to push him off and more like he's letting him know he's there.

The kid is riding like a dick -  end of. But im not saying he's being malicious or anything any more than the guy who put his hand out. This has been blown out of all proportion imho

Better to slow down and call out your presence rather than squeeze by.

Undecided if the left arm was offensive or defensive.

from what we can here of the audio the kids were aware of his presence and chose not to bring thier wild antics under control

When other road users are being daft, I moderate my speed not barrel on into trouble.
I've just had to come to a complete stop in the car to avoid a moron overtaking unsafely.
Take control and mitigate the risk.
Send the footage in afterwards.

It's a kid on a bike doing a wheelie... Leave him alone and he may keep on cycling for the rest of his life. Was absolutely doing no harm. Impatient guy trying to push passed.. I bet he drives a car the same way.

Guy heading home from work, starts overtake, kid doing wheelie has no control and swerves to the right hand side of the cycle lane. Alternatively if kid has control then he deliberatly (?) swerves in front of overtaking rider. Either way there was no legitamate reason for the kid to move right

16 year old me would think "cool wheelie"

51 year old me thinks "ooh, that's a bit risky"

It's a shame most the teenagers we see riding around having so much fun on two wheels will probably never ride again as soon as they get a car.

I saw this and I'm still not sure if he tries to push him over or he is putting his arm out to try and protect himself from the twat swinging all over the place in a wheelie. I think my dislike of the oik doing a wheelie might be clouding my judgement....
