You missed the more recent comments along the lines of "Putin hasn't called me a racist and tried to take me off the air, he hasn't tried to teach my kids about racial discrimination, so why should I be against him".

The ones poking fun of him made accounts just to do so, and have one or two posts. They probably found ths article on Google news or something. Not regular readers.

The level of disassociation from reality required to support Trump is truly stunning to observe at times.

These posts also prove that the American concept of unfettered free speech is a failed experiment - it essentially justifies propaganda and puts the onus on individuals to work out the lies - Trump and Putin have shown what a stupid idea that is. Worst of it is, it is infecting the thinking over here, it's why people like Boo get away with planting stupid ideas in people's heads and cannot simply be ignored.

I'd disagree about the problem being free speech. That simply means that the government can't enact laws against certain speech (e.g. how Germany have outlawed Nazi-related speech), but says nothing about how media companies can act.

I think the answer is active moderation and likely de-centralising the big media companies. Also a problem is lack of education about how to navigate modern media and simple fact checking skills. It's notable that we have the same problems over here, where we don't have free speech, but we seem to have elected a media-savvy sociopathic liar into power anyway.

I don't think that government interference in what people are allowed to talk about is necessarily a good thing, though I accept that speech that incites violence against others should be controlled as history has shown how dangerous that can be.

What really bugs me about the situation in the U.S. is that they have the right to bear arms specifically to allow them to overthrow malicious governments (c.f. the British) and then they didn't use them for that purpose and instead seem to be heading towards civil war.

I think conservation-minded Americans should be considering the right to arm bears.

I remember arguing with an American who claimed soccer (football) was a minority sport. I pointed out that it's played around the world, which is why there's such a thing as The World Cup. I also pointed out that cricket is played in far more countries by far more people than American football, which is played seriously in only America and Canada.
