Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I've gone for a Marin Fairfax SC2. I think it'll work a treat as a winter commuter....
Well Duncan, I love and can heartily recommend my Charge Mixer as a year-round, cycle through anything, low-maintenance commuter. They don't make them any more, but its successor, the Grater, is as good, if not better. The Grater 3 will get you Shimano hydraulic disc brakes, an 8 speed Alfine hub and proper, fixed mudguards. The RRP is £799 but now's the time to shop around and get an 'old' 2016 model. Evans Cycles have limited stock available at £639, for example.
