I'm about to go into my 3rd winter with a pair of Rapha winter over-tights. Not padded, as someone else pointed out, you don't need to wash them as often as you have your summer ones underneath
super-cozy too
though I have recently acquired a pair of Stolen Goat leg-warmers, not worn them in the rain or proper cold yet, but I've got high hopes for them
Thanks -- I've been considering these, but I'm not sure about what to wear under them. I need something with a pad, but I'm not inclined to wear full bib shorts. What are you using underneath?
Bibtights without pads for me.
That way I can wear clean shorts more readily.
If the tights get dirty, they can be used multiple times, being dried in between daily use/multiple uses per day.
Gore Power Thermo are my go to pair.
I have also recently acquired a pair of AGU (with insert) double thickness knees/thighs/shins.
Not really used them much. If it's not too cold, then a pair of Howies bibtights (no pad) over bibshorts. No seams to chafe.
I would, however be interested in hearing anyones opinion of Stolen Goat Orkaan vs the new DHB rain defence bibshorts/tights...
Second that. My Icebreaker GT 260 has been going nearly 10 years already. So thick and warm. Just can't be doing with artificial base layers for serious use. One of the best quality things I've ever bought, just doesn't seem to lose shape or bobble or anything. Bit too warm for a lot of days though. Rapha's are thinner and would be the ticket I reckon on really pacey rides.
Normal shorts and Sportful No Rain knee warmers which come down to mid calf on me, with some TIC winter socks this leaves virtually no gap and kept me going all winter last year.
If it's below zero then I put some tights with no padding over the top of this, can't remember the make, they are a bit 'meh' but I usually cycle in all weathers apart from pouring rain. and it's a combo which works.
My best bit of winter wear is a rapha merino long sleeve base layer, just awesome!
A decent merino base layer is a thing of magic, I would't care what brand it came from but don't skimp on this and it pays dividends.
Thanks for all the recommendations and feedback, all... much appreciated!
If you've got a particular variety of summer shorts that you swear by, my two recommendations are:
A: Go for undpadded tights and wear the shorts that you already know are right for you
B: Go for the winter tights by the same brand with the same pad.
I prefer A, as it gives an extra layer to keep your crotch cosy
Did you ride in the rain with your Nanoflex? Been thinking about getting some bibs specifically for heavy rain riding, but not sure if there's any value in it. Have everything else now, just the bibs and maybe wet weather knee warmers..
I have used them extensively in the rain as well as the Gabba 2 and the Alpha Jacket, they work very well but only last for a few washes and then need reproofing with something like this https://www.viovet.co.uk/Nikwax_Tech_Wash_TX_Direct_Wash-In/c8727/?quick...
Thats fine for the Gabba and Alpha as you dont need to wash so often, also maybe arm and leg warmers. The Bibs of course need washing every ride.
Castelli Nanoflex were the best fit on me and have been brilliant. They come up a bit small, though - I'm usually a medium, but had to get a large in these! Minimal seams and very comfortable.
They replaced an absolutely awful pair of Endura Thermolite tights. Came up very big, so I had a small, but they seemed to stretch and lose shape very quickly. The double knee was a nice idea, but sat in the wrong place on my knees, leaving a seam right across my kneecap. Got rid of them in the end.
I really like the look of the Assos T.607_s5 bib shorts, paired with a set of leg warmers (they do a knicker, but the leg length was wrong on me), but they are a tad on the pricey side
If you're really tall and skinny, try Sportful - they seem to suit very long legs.
dhb asv served me well last winter, I think galibier have some new ones on the way I'll be giving those a go.
Moved away from tights and just use normal bibs with leg warmers now.... unless it is absolutely baltic.
dhb roubaix bib tights. I think the exact model I have has been updated but this will be my third winter wearing them and can't complain at all.
I'll second that, dhb Roubaix bib tights are awesome and ridiculously cheap compared to other brands.
Giordana formared carbon for me.
I think Alé has replaced that range in the Giordana lineup though.
Recently bought a pair and was delighted with them.
