There is something about the experience of an alpine(/pyrenean/spanish/italian/whatever) climb which you can't replicate in the UK; 2 or 3 hours straight up is not the same as just doing a hilly ride with lots of up and down. I am fortunate to have family in both spain and france where I have taken the bike and done the climbs near them, but was just wondering whether I could tick off some of the classics in other areas.
Logistics are indeed an issue though. I want to recce Vars/Izoard before l'etape but that is 2.5 hours from Turin, add in 20 min each way for bike assembly/disassembly, fannying around at hire car place etc and it's pushing it to get back in time. I don't sweat much though, I reckon I will still be allowed onto the plane in my lycra
Mallorca a good shout, but got family moving there soon so will have somewhere to stay and the kids with us, no need to be there and back in a day!
Train to Scotland/Wales/Yorkshire/Devon?
Bike to the Chilterns?
Factor in possible delays. Building bike up. Breaking it down. Picking up hire car. Driving to hills. Kitting up. Riding. Descending. Breaking bike down again. Driving to airport. Returning hire car. Checking in. (all sweaty And stinky presumably)
It's not going to be much fun. Presumably it's for a challenge thing? You'd be better off setting a hard route to ride. Ay least you'd have more control.
A flight delay or mislaid bag and you're screwed.
Someone's got to say it... Think of the planet and ride out of London
Madonne from Nice airport? Sa Colabra from Palma?
