Good Commuting Shoes

Can anyone recomend me some good cycling shoes for use with flat (ie not clipless) pedals for commuting. Ideally I want something that will be slim enough to wear under overshoes and have a sole that grips the pedal and is fairly stiff.
Does such footwear exist or am I better of with trainers?

I recently purchased the Exustar 'Stelvio' touring shoes, SPD compatible, with black leather uppers. I find them ideal for flat pedal use or with clipless, as the cleat is recessed you can still walk without the clunk.
They are also a very neat shoe which will sit nicely on platform pedals and in toe clips if required.
They retail at around £70 ish

They're not new - we tested the race shoes a while back (http://road.cc/content/review/3108-dromarti-race-shoe) but the frames *are* new, in fact there was a message on the road.cc hotline just the other day telling us about them... needless to say, we'll be asking for one to try!

I love the fact it says you have to wait 8 "Italian" weeks for delivery!

Dave, you're a cruel man; they're great but as is the price. If I win the lotto tommorrow I'll go for the sportivo shoes to commute in ... but then if i win the lotto I won't be working!
I love the frame on that site too. Are they a new company? Be interesting to see their prices on the gloves that feature in the frame photo when/if they start to do them.

Yes, the Specialized Stumpy trainers were reviewed here on road.cc. Their soles aren't designed for cycling - they just use the nice BG insoles inside.

Fringe, Thanks for the link - I like the look of those but I couldn't see anything suggesting the sole was cycling specific and unfortunately I'll never test their suitability for "the victory walk from bike to podium"!

Therevokid, I know what you mean - I think I'm going to give in and get some double sided flat/spd pedals such as the shimano m324's. Then I'll get some roadie shoes I can still walk in. That at least means I can use overshoes and the bike is still suitable for using with trainers.

just the other day i saw some specialized 'casual' shoes with stiff cycling specific soles.

I've found that most "flat" pedal shoes are too large
for most (if not all) overshoes :-[

Keep looking at the Keen ones, but as sandles and SPD not a big help i guess!
