Help with BB selection : DEORE XT Crankset FC-T8000

Hi

Can anyone clarify for me the difference between

BB-MT801 abd   BB-MT800 ?

Id like to buy this crankset

https://www.bike24.de/p1174490.html?sku=623473&gclid=Cj0KCQjw3a2iBhCFARI...

And they say the bb-mt800 BB is the one , but they themselves stock the  bb-mt801 which seems identical.

What obvious spec have I missed?

The 801 model should be fine with this crank. The increase in the least significant digit probably indicates that Shimano made some kind of small change to the design while in production and this is a newer version.

BUT if this is for the bike we talked about before, you might hit compatibility problems with the Tiagra road triple front mech. MTB cranksets put the chainrings further from the centreline (to make room for the huge tyres) and sometimes road front mechs can't reach out far enough. The existing Sugino chainset likely to be ok, or fixable with a shorter BB axle. Or look at a Shimano Road triple: Tiagra from current range, 105 triples still seem to avaialble at some UK retailers.

Hi , I didn't get the tiagra crank. I'm not sure it can have a small enough inner ring for loaded touring. I'm sticking with my sugino...for now to see if it works... The one I'd likely replace it with is linked above, the FC-T8000. For the ridiculous low price of the tiagra FD, I might as well try.  I won't pretend I can fully follow the compatibility maze. If the sugino doesn't play well , I'll come back here for more hand holding. But the further I look into it  , the more I'm certain that I want that frame to stay part of my life. Hopefully the ten speed tiagra make over will reignite it. I hope I haven't misunderstood re the crank.. if you know the 9sp sugino crank won't work please wave a flag. The diversity of opinion on these things is... Confusing 🤣

I think there's a very good chance you will get away with the Sugino crank. I've certainly done exactly that on a bike before and (once I'd found the right front mech for the Shimano shifter) it worked fine.
