The thing with breathable waterproofs is that they can only be as good as the DWR. Once the DWR fails, causing the outer fabric to wet-out, they lose their breathability in the wet. They then take on the properties of a bin bag. Of course, whilst the DWR remains good the waterproof membrane is redundant.
Given that the DWR always fails (hence the need for the waterproof membrane), most of these uber expensive jackets are only breathable whilst it's dry, and waterproof when it's wet.
My understanding of shakedry is that the ptfe membrane is on the outside. It is inherently water-repellent, it has a waxy feel to it. So no DWR is required, it's in the mass. Hence, unlike everything else, it is remains both waterproof and breathable in the wet. But it's fragile and won't tolerate a rucksack, won't stretch, and comes in one colour only - black.
Not sure the colours comment is correct any more. The Rapha shakedry has been done in Pink and Purple/blue for a couple of their Pro Teams.
I didn't know that. Odd that it's only available to buy in black then - or am I looking in the wrong place?

Limited editions for RCC long sold out afaik. There's occasional images on line and side mentions in reviews.
Isn't the Gore Shakedry marketed as waterproof as opposed to water resistant?
well spotted!
