Video: Unboxing the new Garmin Edge 1000
GCN have just given us a headstart on this unboxing video of the brand new Garmin Edge 1000, which we gave you a first look at a few weeks ago. The new Edge 1000 isn't due into shops until 18th May so consider this the first time it has been seen in the wild.
To briefly recap, the new Edge 1000 ushers in segment-based timed with Garmin’s own website, Garmin Connect, as well as bike-specific navigation and mapping capabilities and the ability to display your current gear if you run a Shimano Di2 electronic shift system with D-Fly Data Management.
“The Edge 1000 combines the essential legacy features cyclists love from the Edge Touring and Edge 810, with exciting new features including a large high-resolution colour touch screen display, advanced smartphone connectivity, and challenging segment features,” said Andrew Silver, Garmin Product Manager.
You can read much more about it in our Edge 1000 first look article here. It is set to cost £439 with a bundle including Garmin’s HRM3 heart rate monitor and new speed/cadence sensors costing £499.

So the conclusion is you can upload files to Garmin devices if you are on a Linux desktop by using their site?

Also Chris, I can't help but wonder if you work for/are affiliated with Garmin? that post, your only post on this site, looks awfully like marketing copy...

Wow! Maybe it's just me but there appears to be a lot of Garmin Haters posting here. I see the Edge 1000 as a totally different caliper (misspelling intended lol ) of Cycling Computer and the price reflects that difference. What I find hard to understand is how or why would people compare the Edge 1000 to any of the previous lower end Garmin Cycling Computers. First off the Edge 1000 has a much better display I.E. Higher Resolution, Larger, Brighter, and Auto-Backlighting. The Display can also be viewed in Landscape which none of the previous models could do. Second the Edge 1000 has a faster processor to accommodate the numerous New Sensors through an updated Bluetooth and ANT+ Transmitter/Receiver system. I can go on and on but Finally, the Edge 1000 has the ability to see if the call or text you are getting is an emergency or just a hello how are you call or text.
Sure, an iPhone can do some of these things but, the display will not be as visible in direct Sunlight, it will not be Waterproof, and it cannot connect to the new more accurate auto calibrating magnetless sensors. Again, I can go on and on which leads me to the bottom line.
The Edge 1000 is in it's own category. There is nothing on the market right now that can compare to it. I will give it, the new sensors, and the new Garmin Connect a chance before everyone shuts it down before it even is available for purchase. But then again, maybe it's just me.
It's very nice but also insanely expensive for what it is. I can buy an iPhone for the cost of one of these, and it is a significantly more complex and higher spec device. Given the edge 1000 is for all intents and purposes a smartphone without cellular radios I think it's a valid point to make.
I strongly suspect the 1000 was originally going to replace the 800, especially as it shares design cues with the 510. Can't help but wonder if Garmin's marketing department thought otherwise and decided to release the 810 and charge silly money for the 1000.
If this was sold at the price of the 810 it would be about right. 440 quid/600 us is just nuts.
One of the things I love above riding my bike is getting away from my mobile phone for a few hours. Last thing I want is more mobile connectivity. Maybe that's just me
mrmo: Yeah, the privacy issues seem not to be worked out as well as Stravas. Lack of private zones - so you either make the whole ride private or completely public. With Strava your general profile can be restricted to followers only, while activities still appear (and are viewable via) the LBs.
Other niggles: Creating a segment on Garmin, the start/end points can /only/ be set to a recorded GPS location. Recorded GPS points could be many tens, even hundred+, metres distance apart. So if you want to create a segment to start/end at specific places, well you're out of luck.
It feels like a poor, clunky, copy of Strava.
Found i was secret, which i have changed, but in my opinion this is a flaw, Strava gives you the option of blocking areas, this seems to give the user two settings, totally open or totally blocked.
I am aware that you can allow friends to see but from a leaderboard point of view not convinced.

mrmo: You probably are in them, but only if you select "show only me". If so, the problem is you need to set the activity privacy to "Everyone" to allow it to apper in the overall leaderboard.
Has anyone figured out the Garmin segments? i see leader boards, but they don't have me in them and seem incomplete?

Well Apple have already lost me (as a prospective iPhone customer) due to not being able to use iTunes on Linux. Looks like Garmin might just do the same thing, which would be a shame as I love their kit normally. Luckily though my 510 will automatically upload to connect without needing the computer, though what I'll do when it needs a firmware update is anybody's guess.
This lack of support for non "big-business" IT systems is really starting to irritate me now, as it's increasingly widespread. I guess its another of way of companies forcing us to spend money with other companies, and keeping competition out of the way. Sad indictment of capitalism...
I don't see any new Garmin Connect web site I just see the old one that's been going for yonks. There's definitely no commands for creating segments - not that I would want to.

Me too.....my mates keep showing me mine from their own dashboard and displays on the Carlos Fandango version,when I log in, it's the old one.
Might explain why my file won't upload - just sits there saying "uploading"

I wasn't confusing the two - the Garmin announcement/modern-guide thingy specifically stated Garmin Express (the Mac/Windows) programme would be the only way to upload in Modern. When I didn't see any obvious upload button on the front page of Modern, well, I took what Garmin said at face value.
It's good they have a web upload function still tucked away in there though. You wouldn't have gone looking for it based on what they said about Garmin Express though!
Yeah, I see it too. Weird. They definitely had something saying it was gone, so I wonder if perhaps it's just there for transition and will disappear? Hopefully not.
You might be confusing the import function with the web plugin that used to be used for sync. That has been removed in favour of the separate application, and that's something that Garmin can't do much about.
Because of the the security and stability problems they can cause, the browser designers aren't fond of custom plugins. Chrome is the first to announce a deadline to cut off support for all but a few of them.
I've just discovered Garmin have removed the ability to upload files via the website from the updated Garmin Connect - which everyone will be moved to. Uploading will only work via a Mac/Windows "Garmin Express" programme that you have to install.
That will suck if you're not using Mac/Windows (e.g. Android or any other Linux).
That'll be the end of Garmin for me.
Is there no dedicated Garmin connect app for Android? I thought that was the idea?
I hadn't noticed this, what a shame. Its clear with the Edge 1000 Garmin are now really interested only in building a closed platform, so I suppose the move shouldn't come as too much of a shock.
I've long wanted Strava to get in on the hardware game and put segments on my bars, really hoping that Garmins addition of their own version of segments into the Edge forces Strava to do this. Strava designed software combined with hardware from Bryton or another of the smaller Garmin rivals seems an obvious and profitable partnership. It would also hopefully force Garmin to get real about pricing, the sticker price on the Edge 1000 is insane.
I've just uploaded five files to the new Garmin Connect website.
How did you upload the files? Where is the option? Are you sure you're using the new "Modern" version? The Garmin walk-through for the "modern" site even mentions that browser upload is gone now.
I'm positive I'm using modern.
From the dash click on activities so you bring up the list view. 'Import' is on the far right.
PS I've just been creating some segments in my local area and the leaderboards display wind direction and speed. Eat that Strava.
I thought that too and was disappointed but I emailed Garmin and they told me how to find it; it's a bit hidden away on the activities page.
Good for them. They were very helpful, actually!
That is unfortunate; but until Google Silver takes off it's likely that Android fragmentation (and Linux) will deter many companies from developing for those platforms. There are just too many variables to take into account for QA and testing.
