Giro d'Italia Stage 9: Pieter Weening wins stage, Domenico Pozzovivo jumps up GC

Second career Giro stage win for Orica-GreenEdge's Dutch rider...

Pieter Weening of Orica-GreenEdge has taken his second career Giro d'Italia stage win, beating fellow escapee David Malacarne of Europcar to triumph at the Stage 9 summit finish in Sestola. AG2R-La Mondiale's Domenico Pozzovivo, 10th overall this morning, attacked with 4km remaining of the final climb and made up 30 seconds on his rivals. BMC Racing's Cadel Evans retains the race leader's maglia rosa.

Pozzovivo's AG2R-La Mondiale supported him well throughout the stage and when the Italian launched his attack, no-one from the group containing the overall contenders was able to follow him. He rises to fourth overall, 1minute 20 seconds behind Evans.

One by one, the Italian picked off members off what had originally been a 14-man break o the 172km stage from Lugo, just two men remaining ahead of him on the road - Malacarne, seeking the biggest win of his career, and Weening, who wore the race leader's maglia rosa in the 2011 race.
