Three men in court after South African cyclist films gunpoint bikejacking (+ video)

Three men have appeared in court in South Africa after a cyclist was robbed at gunpoint on Saturday of his mountain bike and various personal effects, but not the GoPro camera that recorded the incident.

The helmet camera footage helped police in Western Cape province track down the suspects, reports eNews Channel Africa.

As well as his bike, cyclist Malcolm Fox was also robbed of his mobile phone, car keys and a pair of Oakley sunglasses. But the men who held him up didn't seem to realise that the object on his helmet was a video camera.

Police spokesman Andre Traut revealed that two men were arrested on Sunday and the third on Monday.

He said: "Thorough investigation work led investigators to the suspects with the help of footage recorded with a camera which was mounted on the cyclist’s helmet.

“The first suspect aged 22 was arrested on Sunday at his residence in Sir Lowry’s Pass and a Luger firearm was seized.

“The same day another 22 year old suspect was arrested, also in Sir Lowry’s pass."

The three men have been charged with robbery, and police say that they have recovered the stolen items.
