Bicycle, the part-crowdfunded 90-minute documentary that charts the UK’s relationship with cycling, receives its world premiere at the Yorkshire Festival of Cycling this Friday, the eve of the Tour de France Grand Départ in Leeds – and there will be royalty in attendance in the shape of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry.
The outdoor screening of the film, which is scheduled to receive a limited theatrical release this summer and autumn, with a DVD coming out in September, will be powered at the festival by a team of 12 cyclists.
A trailer of the film, directed by double BAFTA winner Michael B Clifford and has been produced in association with Trek, Shimano, the Bicycle Assocation and Birmingham Cycle Revolution, has been released ahead of its premiere.
The film, which charts the history of the bicycle in Britain starting from the late Victorian period, seeks to address the question of why cycling and bikes are back in fashion here.
It looks at cycle design, the sporting aspect and cycling as a form of transport, with contributors including Sir Dave Brailsford, Mike Burrows, Gary Fisher, Chris Boardman and Ned Boulting, who describes the documentary as, “Lyrical, affectionate, beautiful. A hymn of praise to a humble wonder; the bicycle."
You can find more information about the film, including details of screenings, on its website.
