Alberto Contador rules out Vuelta return

Complications in recovery from broken leg mean Tinkoff-Saxo rider will miss home Grand Tour

Alberto Contador of Tinkoff-Saxo has said that complications to his fractured leg sustained on Stage 10 of the Tour de France last week mean he will not be fit enough to ride the Vuelta, which starts on August 23.

The Spaniard fractured his tibia in a crash on a descent on the stage to La Planche des Belles Filles, riding on for 20 kilometres before he was forced to give up.

Yesterday, he tweeted:

Contador has won the Spanish Grand Tour twice, in 2008 and 2012, but his current season looks over as a result of his injury.
