Police issue fresh witness appeal over New Year's Day death of Hants cyclist

Police in Hampshire have issued a fresh witness appeal in connection with the death of 32-year-old cyclist Robert Stephenson on New Year’s Day.

Mr Stephenson was killed in a collision involving multiple vehicles on the A3 near Liphook, near the southern entrance to the Hindhead Tunnel.

A man aged 33 years from Waterlooville was subsequently arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving, and has been bailed until 8 April while enquiries continue.

In a statement published on Hampshire Constabulary’s website, senior investigating officer Sergeant Darren Ord said: "I'd like to thank members of the public who have come forward to assist the investigation so far.

"We want to hear from more motorists who may have seen the cyclist heading southbound on the A3 just after the Hindhead Tunnel shortly after 7am on New Year's Day (Thursday, January 1, 2015).

"Another line of enquiry is anyone who saw a vehicle that appeared to be broken down on the near-side of the southbound carriageway.

"This vehicle was described as a Ford Fiesta car derived van with its hazard lights on and a flashing orange light roof beacon," he added.
