Ouch moment of the week! is a collision between Sven Nys and a crossing spectator in the recent Waregem Cyclocross Masters race that resulted in a very broken Trek Boone cyclocross bike. The race combines elements of cyclocross - mud and hurdles - with tarmac and tight corners of a criterium race, and is billed as the festive closing of the cyclocross season. Unsurprisingly, Nys wasn't able to defend his 2014 title, going home early
The caption on Twitter translates as "Sven Nys’s bike, which was in a collision with a spectator who was crossing during the time trial in Waregem."
Sven collided with the spectator in the first round of knockout heats. The incident put Nys out of the running to defend his title, and it was Mathieu van der Poel who took victory.
According to a report on Sport.be, Nys "crashed hard into a careless spectator during the time trial that opened the packed programme. With his bike broken and himself in considerable pain, he had to abandon the rest of the evening.
We've no word on what happened to the spectator, but it's clear that the bike didn't come out of the incident very well at all, the carbon fibre frame shattering at the down tube junction with the head tube. Carbon fibre frames are incredibly strong but not really designed to take such a heavy front-end impact, and when carbon goes, it goes with spectacular results, as this photo demonstrates. Must have been a solidly built spectator to inflict such considerable damage.
Commenting on Twitter about the incident, Sven Nys said: "Oof! I never imagined this being proposed in the final round! Everything hurts! Head-on crash! Knocked out for a while!"
He's okay though. He later tweeted: "Ok, am out of my bed ! That lasted just langer.Ik can reassure everyone ! Within a few days I'm old self again !"
As well as the racing, a new addition to this event, and which reminds us of the mountain bike bunny hopping competitions from back in the day, is a high jump for cyclocross riders. Tom Meeusen stole the show, hoofing his bike an incredible 75cm into the air. He tried going above 80cm but failed three times. Here's a video of the high jump.
Coming to a UK cyclocross race soon?

I like the way you've translated Sven's "Ppppppfffff" as "Oof"!
