Cyclist dead after collision with car near Boston, Lincolnshire

Police appeal for witnesses after rider dies of injuries in hospital

A 74-year old man has died after being involved in a collision with a car in Frithville, near Boston Lincolnshire on Thursday afternoon.

The crash took place at about 2:20pm near to the junction of West Fen Drainside and Brothertoft Road. The rider from Boston was hit by a red Renault Megane driven by an 88-year-old Boston woman.

The cyclist was taken to Pilgrim hospital, Boston, but later died as a result of serious injuries.

Police were unable to release the man's name yesterday as they were still in the process of identifying and informing the relatives and friends of the deceased.

Sgt Chris Dennett of the Collision Investigation Team is leading the investigation. He said: “We are trying to piece together exactly what happened. I am looking for anyone who saw the collision. Also witnesses who saw the cyclist pedalling along or walking and pushing his bike or the red Renault Megane being driven along prior to the crash.”

Anyone with information should call the non-emergency 101 number or the Collision Witness Hotline 01522 558855 and quote incident number 240 of April 23.

He was heavily involved in the mountain bike boom of the late 1980s as a racer, team manager and race promoter, and that led to writing for Mountain Biking UK magazine shortly after its inception. He got the gig by phoning up the editor and telling him the magazine was rubbish and he could do better. Rather than telling him to get lost, MBUK editor Tym Manley called John’s bluff and the rest is history.

Since then he has worked on MTB Pro magazine and was editor of Maximum Mountain Bike and Australian Mountain Bike magazines, before switching to the web in 2000 to work for CyclingNews.com. Along with road.cc founder Tony Farrelly, John was on the launch team for BikeRadar.com and subsequently became editor in chief of Future Publishing’s group of cycling magazines and websites, including Cycling Plus, MBUK, What Mountain Bike and Procycling.

John has also written for Cyclist magazine, edited the BikeMagic website and was founding editor of TotalWomensCycling.com before handing over to someone far more representative of the site's main audience.

He joined road.cc in 2013. He lives in Cambridge where the lack of hills is more than made up for by the headwinds.

I know that bit of road well. Makes you wonder what must've been going on considering it's a wide straight stretch. What makes this story even worse is that some sick local **** burgled the poor chaps house when the story broke. As if the family don't have enough to deal with! rip fella.
