Wiltshire cyclist, 73, dies a week after lorry collision

A 73-year-old cyclist from Wiltshire has died in hospital from injuries sustained in a collision with a lorry last week as he cycled to his local cricket club.

Roger Morris was taken by air ambulance to Bristol’s Southmead Hospital after the collision at around 9am last Monday, but never regained consciousness and died of his injuries yesterday, reports the Bath Chronicle.

He had been cycling to Corsham Cricket Club, where he spent three spells as captain of the Second XI from 1978 to 1995, and in the latter year also passed on the role of fixtures secretary to his son, Mark.

A statement posted yesterday on the club website said: “The thoughts and prayers of all at Corsham Cricket Club are with Roger's wife, Mary, and their family and close friends at their sad loss. Roger will be missed by all who knew him.”

The club’s membership secretary, John Gale, said: "During his long playing career, he bamboozled many a batsman with his left arm slow bowling, regularly taking wickets.

"He was often to be seen tinkering with club machinery which he kept running over many years,” he added.

Wiltshire Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the collision, which took place on Pickwick Road near the Methuen Arms hotel, bar and restaurant, and can be contacted on 101.
