Is twerking the new cycling? UCI Facebook page gets hacked

The UCI’s Facebook page was hacked today – and it took several hours for world cycling’s governing body to be able to get back to business as usual on the social network ahead of one of its biggest weekends of the year.

Instead of learning the latest about the build-up to the UCI Cyclo-Cross World Championships at Zolder in the Netherlands, from lunchtime onwards visitors were greeted to delights such as a twerking freestyle video and footage of the Dribble Sisters running through their dance moves.

Both those videos were linked from the website 9Gag.tv via Laughwithvoice.com and it’s safe to say neither is 100 per cent safe for work (although the twerking video does feature someone being rather energetic while dressed in Lycra, so does at least have in common with more usual UCI fare).

In a message posted to the social network shortly after 7pm GMT this evening, the organisation said: “As you may have noticed our page was being hacked for the last few hours ... But we're now back on track for the UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships this weekend!”

We can’t help wondering whether it was indeed a case of hacking, or whether one of its admins accidentally shared something destined to be posted on a personal account.

That’s something we at road.cc towers know from experience can happen occasionally when running multiple social media accounts ... although thankfully a colleague will usually point out what’s happened pretty pronto!
