Southampton cyclist killed in lorry collision

Police appeal for witnesses to fatal incident on Tuesday afternoon

Police in Hampshire have launched an appeal after a cyclist was killed in Southampton yesterday afternoon following a collision involving a lorry.

The fatal crash took place at 2pm at a set of traffic lights at the junction of New Road and East Park Terrace, reports the Daily Echo.

Pictures in the newspaper’s report suggest that the driver of the lorry, whose cab bears the livery of Sussex-based plant hire firm J Webb, may have been turning left.

The victim, a man aged in his 60s, was given CPR at the scene and taken to Southampton General Hospital where he died from his injuries.

One witness told the Daily Echo: “I saw a bike all buckled up under the front of the lorry and knew it had to be something serious.

“Someone must have seen something – there would have been students walking up and down the road at the time.”

Hampshire Constabulary have asked anyone who was parked or was driving along New Road at the time to contact them since officers believe they may have important information.

The Serious Collision Investigation Unit can be reached on 101, quoting Operation Occur, or the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Yeah, close to home. Nervous few hours waiting for mates to check in and confirm ok.

I know the junction well and the lorry was over the weight limit for the road (7.5t). Left lane is a bus lane terminating just before the junction. Profile of the corner and length of the vehicle means he would be turning left from the right hand (Ahead Only) lane. Doesn't appear to be a usual left hook as bike is under the front of the lorry in the pics.
