Josh Ibbett abandons Transcontinental Race

Defending champion suffered recurrence of back injury

Josh Ibbett, winner of the Transcontinental Race in 2015, has been forced to abandon this year’s edition within the first 24 hours due to the recurrence of a back injury.

The unsupported cross-Europe race to Istanbul in Turkey began in Geraardsbergen, Belgium, at 10pm on Friday evening.

On Saturday afternoon, race organisers confirmed that the British rider had been forced to withdraw at Romilly-sur-Seine, southwest of Paris, after covering more than 300 kilometres in less than 14 hours.

The race is currently being led by the Belgian rider Kristof Allegaert, winner of the inaugural edition in 2013 and who successfully defended his title 12 months later.

Simon joined road.cc as news editor in 2009 and is now the site’s community editor, acting as a link between the team producing the content and our readers. A law and languages graduate, published translator and former retail analyst, he has reported on issues as diverse as cycling-related court cases, anti-doping investigations, the latest developments in the bike industry and the sport’s biggest races. Now back in London full-time after 15 years living in Oxford and Cambridge, he loves cycling along the Thames but misses having his former riding buddy, Elodie the miniature schnauzer, in the basket in front of him.

Looks like I saw two racers today, one at Lapalisse, France and the other one below Moulins. They really don't carry much, one had no more kit than Josh Ibbett.

Shame, wanted to see if he could close the gap on Algaert this year.
