Geraint Thomas joins Chris Froome in tomorrow's Olympic time trial

Geraint Thomas, who crashed out of contention in Saturday’s Olympic road race when he seemed set to contest the medals, will have another chance to add to his collection tomorrow after being called up to ride the time trial.

Team GB secured an extra place for tomorrow’s event after a number of riders including Australia’s Richie Porte were forced to withdrew as a result of injuries sustained during crashes in Saturday’s road race.

The Welshman, who finished 11th on Saturday despite his late crash, will line up with Chris Froome, bronze medallist behind Sir Bradley Wiggins at London 2012, and who along with Tom Dumoulin of the Netherlands is favourite to take gold tomorrow.

Thomas, winner of team pursuit gold on the track at Beijing in 2008 and in London four years ago, said: “I'm really thrilled to get a last minute call up to represent Team GB in the time trial race tomorrow.

“I would like to wish all those who withdrew through injury a quick recovery.

“I lost quite a bit of skin in my crash and my hip took a good whack but other than that my legs are feeling good and I can’t wait to race again tomorrow.

“Thanks for all your messages and kind words – feel very honoured to be representing Team GB again!”

The 54.6km course follows two laps of a circuit that starts and finishes in Pontal and takes in the first of the two loops ridden in the road race, but with the riders avoiding the cobbled section and riding a smoother surface alongside it instead. The event takes place from 2pm-5pm UK time.

Last month, Thomas finished seventh in the first of the two time trials that featured in the Tour de France.

In the women’s time trial, which starts at 12.30pm UK time and covers 29.9km, Team GB will be represented by Emma Pooley, winner of Olympic silver in Beijing and world time trial champion in 2010.
