Video: Cyclist starts celebrating win early - and gets pipped to the line

Jamie Wlkins left red-faced after throwing away victory at race in Cirencester

A rider taking part in a race in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, was left red-faced when he started celebrating a win early – only to have victory snatched from him on the line.

Jamie Wilkins punched the air as he headed towards the line at the end of the Via Roma Twilight Criterium support race.

But as this video posted to Facebook by DB Max Sports Timing & Events shows, he didn’t seem to notice rival Jamie Penton coming up on his right to grab the win.

Commenting on the video on Facebook, Wilkins said: “My stupid mistake, I admit readily. Pretty embarrassing but just a bike race. On to the next one.”

He’s far from the first rider to be caught out through a premature victory celebration, however.

Others include Spanish pro Eloy Teruel, who thought he had won a stage of the 2014 Tour of California when in fact there was still one more lap of the closing circuit to go.

To be fair, I would happily punch the air if I placed second in a road race.

Can't get more high profile than Erik Zabel throwing away the 2004 Milan-San Remo like this surely?

Would that be the same Jamie Wilkins who writes for ProCycling (and constantly refers to his own 'greatness' and shamelessly crows after 'winning' sportives)?  I truly hope so 1
