Video: Cyclist stops mid ride to save cow's life - by delivering her calf

Incident happened in Galicia, northwest Spain over the weekend

A cyclist in Spain had an unforgettable bike ride with friends yesterday morning – he stopped to deliver a calf after the group came across a pregnant cow in distress.

Jose Antonio Faraldo, known as Fari, was taking part in his regular Sunday ride with the Bike and Beer mountain bike club from Betanzos in northwest Spain’s Galicia region.

La Voz de Galicia reports that as they entered the hamlet of Cela, the discovered some locals with the exhausted animal, which had been trying to give birth for five hours.

With no vet available and the cow close to collapsing, Faraldo – who was actually born in the hamlet, which is home to just 12 people –  took off his jersey and set to work.

Another of the cyclists, Juan Amor Buyo, said: “One of the calf’s legs wasn’t coming out, but Fari managed to put it back inside and then take it out.

“He is not a vet or anything, but he grew up in the village and remembered from when he was younger.”

The cow fainted from exhaustion after Faraldo had delivered the calf, although both mother and child are now said to be doing well.

I hope he is rewarded for his troubles. Like with a nice, new Brooks saddle in a few years time.

I heard a cow wailing one morning on my commute then saw it in the field, clearly giving birth but with no farmer around.

I'm afraid I just continued on. Bad enough turning up to work with road spray and sweat without adding bovine placenta to the mix.
