Giro d'Italia Stage 5: Fernando Gaviria doubles up in Messina

Colombian sprinter takes his second stage of 100th edition of Italian Grand Tour

Fernando Gaviria has taken his second stage win of the 100th Giro d'Italia, the 22-year-old Colombian's debut Grand Tour.

The Quick Step Floors rider won the sprint in Messina to move into the lead of the points classification, while his team mate Bob Jungels - who took the overall lead from Gaviria on the Etna stage yesterday - retains the overall lead.

Jakub Marteczko of Wilier Triestina-Selle Italia was second today, with the Irish sprinter Sam Bennett of Bora-Hansgrohe third.

The 159km stage from Pedara concluded with a 7km circuit in defending champion Vincenzo Nibali's home town.

But there was embarrassment for one of his Bahrain-Merida team mates, Luka Pibernik, who raised his arms in triumph as he crossed the line after getting off the front of the peloton, only to find there was still a lap to go.
