Giro d'Italia Stage 11: Omar Fraile wins from break, Tom Dumoulin keeps lead

Team Sky's Geraint Thomas loses more time to GC rivals...

Dimension Data rider Omar Fraile has won Stage 11 of the 100th Giro d'Italia, beating fellow breakaway companions Rui Costa of UAE Team Emirates and Cannondale Drapac's Pierre Rolland to take the victory in Bagno di Romagna.

Tom Dumoulin of Sunweb retains the overall lead, but on a stage that began in the Florentin suburb Ponte di Ema, where Italian legend Gino Bartali lived, Team Sky's Geraint Thomas slipped back down the overall standings after being distanced on the final climb, as did LottoNL-Jumbo's Steven Kruijswijk, both losing around three quarters of a minute to their rivals.

Following the stage Fraile - second overall to team mate Serge Pauwels at last month's Tour de Yorkshire - said: “It's been an incredible day. It couldn't have gone any better. I'm super happy.

"It's a win I've dreamt of for a long time. I've had a passion for the Giro since I was a kid. This is my best win ever.”

Race leader Dumoulin said: "We were not scared of Amador or the Astana riders. We were doing our own pace.

"We knew other teams would also ride behind them so we never considered giving away the Maglia Rosa. It was an amazing team work and we are really happy.”

Great stage, but I went to bed last night thinking that that stage win from a sprint after being in the break all day was a bit 'too good', OR and I hope the OR is true, he's a real talent at 26 just starting to realise his potential.
