Cyclist killed in Northern Ireland after driver crashes into club ride

Another rider remains in hospital in a critical condition after fatal crash on Tuesday

A cyclist has been killed in Northern Ireland after a driver crashed into a club ride near Bangor Two other riders were hospitalised in the incident, one of them sustaining critical injuries.

The fatal crash happened on a dual carriageway between Bangor and Newtownards at around 1.50pm on Tuesday afternoon, reports the Belfast Telegraph.

The 59-year-old driver of the vehicle involved, a Hyundai 4x4, was arrested at the scene and taken into police custody and has since been released on police bail.

Gavin Moore, aged 40, died in the Royal Victoria Hospital as a result of the injuries sustained in the collision which happened as he took part in a novice ride with the North Down Cycling Club.

The day before, he had asked on the club’s Facebook page: “Will we give it a miss this week with the holidays?"

A message posted to the same page by Sam Carson after Tuesday’s incident said: "It's with great regret the committee has to inform you of the passing of club and committee member Gavin Moore.

"Gareth Boyle and Keith Freel were also involved. Gareth suffered serious but non life-threatening injuries, Keith was given the okay, just a very bad concussion.

"Rachy Sinnamon [was] also involved, but thankfully walked away.

“The committee send the condolences and sympathies to his mother and father, partner Joanne, Gavin's kids, Adam and Luke, Joanne's kids and the whole family circle," the message added.

Mr Boyle remains in a critical condition in the Royal Victoria Hospital, while Mr Freel has been released after being treated for concussion.

Inspector Stephen McGuigan of the Police Service of Northern Ireland said: “I would ask anyone who was travelling on the Newtownards Road near Conlig at the time of the collision and who may have information which could assist us with our enquiries to contact officers at the Collision Investigation Unit on 101 quoting reference number 691 of 11/07/17.”

Just passing this on:

Following the tragic crash a few days ago that killed North Down Cycling Club's Gavin Moore and injured several others, some details have been posted about his funeral on Saturday.

Gavin's wife Joanne and family have invited his cycling friends to form a tribute procession to cycle with Gavin on his last journey and to show their respect by wearing their club kit.

Funeral is scheduled for 09:30 on Saturday at Hamilton Road Presbyterian Church with funeral procession to Clandeboye Cemetery after the service.

Hamilton Road Presbyterian Church
Prospect Road,
Bangor,
Co. Down,

RIP

This carriageway is pretty much a motorway in all but name. There was a cyclist killed last year, just a bit up the road from this one, I never heard what happened the driver that killed that cyclist. A few years ago two dicks were racing each other and one undertook the other on the hard shoulder and killed a woman out running. You never hear what happens these drivers who kill, i'd love to know what psni's and the pps's track record for punishing this type driving is, I'm guessing it's awful.

On on another note I hope the riders who were on the scene and with Gavin and the other injured riders are ok and will continue to cycle, can't be easy seeing friends suffer like that. My thoughts to Gavins family and friends.

That bonnet ...

Awful sight.

If the news of this awful event isn't enough in itself to stop bickering over detail then the image in that article should be. Whilst I, from experience, realise it's easy to be drawn into unnecessary spats, there is a time and a place for it.

RIP Gavin.

I wish a speedy recovery to all those touched by this terrible incident.

WTAF! Are you people for real?

Can we stop babbling on about Dual Carriagewyas (or not!) and actually focus on the fact that another cyclist has been denied enjoinyg the rest of their life by this tragic incident. We don't know the circumstances so lets all stop speculating shall we?

My sincerest condolences go out to all friends and family of Gavin, and I would like to wish a speedy and full recovery to the injured riders.

No, I'm completely incapable of doing that. I only live in the words I have typed in this thread. Outside of them, I have nothing.

Happy to follow your lead though.

Pretty much exactly what I would've written brooksby, but as one of the protagonists of the semantics it wouldn't've been appropriate.

Thanks.

As an aside, would it not be more befitting that comments on these sorts of incidents actually focus on expressing sympathy and support for those affected rather than spiral into semantic debates or people trying to play detective?

NDCC are a big club so I'm sure they have members who visit this site regularly and some of the stuff above isn't really what they will want to read following the tragic loss of one of their members.

I would have thought that the sympathy is taken as read, actually. I would hope that any club members would understand that.

The "semantic debates and playing detective" are what the Internet exists for, surely?, and are a way for people to express their concern and anger that yet another cyclist appears to have been killed by yet another distracted motorist.

Club ride. So, you know: large (ish) number of cyclists. On a dual carriageway (sod the speed limit, there are two lanes in your direction and you don't need to worry about oncoming traffic when you overtake). How on earth did someone manage to drive into them??? Where were they looking?

Yes I was BarryBianchi, I was trying to stop you making a cock of yourself by debating what is or isn't a dual carriageway while a family is grieving and friends of the victim are likely to be reading this.

I'm sorry, I failed. But do carry on.

Tragic news. It doesn't matter what type of road it is - this should not be happening. Very sad.

A d/c with good sight lines is much safer than a twisty road with a ridiculous 60mph limit on it every day of the week. I ride a bypass road every weekend and the odd day during the week at peak times, plus the A505 d/c between Baldock and Royston which has trafic doing 70-80, I've also ridden the A1 BITD on a Sunday with high speed traffic (yes much less dense than usual but still 70-80+mph)

Plenty of twisty roads I've done over the last 30 years have felt more exposed/worried about being rear ended than on d/c type of roads.

RIP fellah, condolances to family.

For fear of disrespecting the victim with petty oneupmanship. Here's an unequivocal definition of a dual carriageway.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dual_carriageway#United_Kingdom

Now stop it!

He was correcting you. You don't need strength, just to check yourself before getting into debates.

No he wasn't. The road in question is a 60 mph DC. Fact - I ride it.  Why start posting totally irrelecant pictures of local urban roads as if that's contributing anything.

In your earlier double post, you say 'that's not a dual carriageway'. It is, you're wrong, move on.

Ps: I'm aware I've fallen into the trap. The cock is strong with this one.

A dual carriageway is simply a road with a central reservation.  Nothing more should be inferred from the description than that.  Here's a dual carriageway near me:

That's not a Dual Carriageway, or I very much doubt it, unless that's got a 70mph speed limit, which it needs to be a DC.  The A21 where this tragedy happened is a proper DC main route.
