Near Miss of the Day 19: Scooter rider pulls out on cyclist without looking

Our regular feature highlighting close passes caught on camera from around the country – today it’s London's South Bank...

It's not just cars, lorries vans and buses that cyclists need to look out for in a busy city, as the latest video in our Near Miss of the Day series shows.

Uploaded to YouTube by road.cc reader Laura Fairy, it shows the moment a scooter rider pulled out on her without looking on Upper Ground in London's South Bank district.

Laura said: "A young lad on a scooter pulls out forgetting to look.

"He did catch up with me and apologise, I hope he learns his lesson and doesn't end up under one of the lorries that are delivering to the building sites."

Laura's YouTube channel also includes one of the more arresting sites we've seen caught on a helmetcam - a man crossing the road outside St Paul's Cathedral with what appears to be a javelin in his hand.

Over the years road.cc has reported on literally hundreds of close passes and near misses involving badly driven vehicles from every corner of the country – so many, in fact, that we’ve decided to turn the phenomenon into a regular feature on the site. One day hopefully we will run out of close passes and near misses to report on, but until that happy day arrives, Near Miss of the Day will keep rolling on.

If you’ve caught on camera a close encounter of the uncomfortable kind with another road user that you’d like to share with the wider cycling community please send it to us at info [at] road.cc or contact us via the road.cc Facebook page.

Simon joined road.cc as news editor in 2009 and is now the site’s community editor, acting as a link between the team producing the content and our readers. A law and languages graduate, published translator and former retail analyst, he has reported on issues as diverse as cycling-related court cases, anti-doping investigations, the latest developments in the bike industry and the sport’s biggest races. Now back in London full-time after 15 years living in Oxford and Cambridge, he loves cycling along the Thames but misses having his former riding buddy, Elodie the miniature schnauzer, in the basket in front of him.

Forget yo Mamma. Is no one going to talk about the guy with the Javelin?!  I'm sure there must be a law against running around with something like that!

That's not a javelin: he was just pleased to see Yo Momma.

yes, but the idiot on the bike continues to pedal fast even if he sees the asshole coming.  claiming way is dangerous for cyclists. be predictive and assume you are always on a stop sign. they have a stop sign , but they will not give a shit about you.

I was in old town Kalamata some years ago and noticed that none of the smaller junctions (intersections) had Give Way or Stop signs (or lines), yet eveybody stopped, looked then proceeded for fear of being sideswiped.

Wouldn't work in this country, we're too thick.

There is nothing whatsoever "constructive" about any of this. This "series" is nothing more than rubberneckking clic-bate that serves no purpose whatsoever.

And your point is what exactly?  Comments not coming up to your stratospheric standards, that seem to consist entirely of criticising other forum users.  I'd demand your money back if I were you.

Bit rich.

This'd be simpler all round if you flounced. Again.

Nope - easiest to wait till your mum says it's time to turn the light off.

This is London.  That happens 1,000+ times a day.
