Near Miss of the Day 32: Van driver cuts across cycle lane, indicating only as they do so

Our regular feature highlighting close passes caught on camera from around the country – today it’s North London

Today’s near miss happened earlier this week on the A10 in North London. A van cuts across the cycle lane immediately in front of a cyclist as the driver for some reason pulls into a bus stop.

In classic fashion, the driver indicates at the exact moment he makes his manoeuvre.

The incident occurred on Wednesday at about 5.20pm.

Uploader Mr B, told us: “The road becomes a bus lane ahead but I held off accelerating as I didn't want to be parallel with the van or undertake it. It proved to be a wise choice.”

He added that he had been riding with a friend at the time, "so it was almost two of us taken out."

The incident has been reported via the Met Police's RoadSafe website. This doesn't result in investigation or enforcement action, but does mean that details are logged should the same vehicle be involved in a criminal investigation at a later date.

Over the years road.cc has reported on literally hundreds of close passes and near misses involving badly driven vehicles from every corner of the country – so many, in fact, that we’ve decided to turn the phenomenon into a regular feature on the site. One day hopefully we will run out of close passes and near misses to report on, but until that happy day arrives, Near Miss of the Day will keep rolling on.

If you’ve caught on camera a close encounter of the uncomfortable kind with another road user that you’d like to share with the wider cycling community please send it to us at info [at] road.cc or send us a message via the road.cc Facebook page.

If the video is on YouTube, please send us a link, if not we can add any footage you supply to our YouTube channel as an unlisted video (so it won't show up on searches).

Please also let us know whether you contacted the police and if so what their reaction was, as well as the reaction of the vehicle operator if it was a bus, lorry or van with company markings etc.

Alex has written for more cricket publications than the rest of the road.cc team combined. Despite the apparent evidence of this picture, he doesn't especially like cake.

RoadSafe reports can and do go to prosecution when appropriate.

The reporting party digitally signs a witness statement, one of the changes made in the last year.

Phone the company, the van is sign written 'Roburn'. Email the footage and ask them to have a word with the driver.

Just driven up and down the country and had this happen numerous times. The main problem is that people won't admit when they're wrong as it always appeared to be my fault for not letting them pull out/in.

I've said for a long time, the standards of road craft in this country are appalling across all users (cyclists, and people who use bikes, included). The selfishness is shocking and lack of self awareness is saddening.

As long as I'm alright then fuck the rest of you!

This.

The number of people who assume that, because they're signalling to change lane, you simply MUST let them in, is scary. Bollocks to the consequences for you, whether you can't slow down or change lane yourself because of other cars. They need to move over.

It's parasitic driving - their survival on the road requires others who are less selfish and more competent to make allowances for their shitty behaviour. They're a drain on societal goodwill. If my unscientific observations (confirmation bias?) are reliable, it's also cowardly/bullying behaviour - it is MUCH less likely to happen to me when I'm driving the truck than when I'm in the Golf.

It's simplest to assume they're twats out of the car, too, but that metal box does seem to give people false courage.

Definitely right Davel,  I was driving on the motorway the other day, passing cars in the middle lane and a car in the inside lane about 5m in front started to indicate they were coming out, but because there was a car in the outside lane I couldn't go anywhere.  The car in the inside lane took umbridge to this fact and proceeded to blare their horn as I went by them, then sat in my boot flashing their lights.

But that highlights some drivers thoughts on entitlement, that because they had indicated they seemed to think they had the right of way and that I was somehow in the wrong

Manoeuvre, signal, mirror.

Perhaps the last one.

Maybe the second.

Not only crap driving, but it appears to have pulled into a bus stop.  Probably so that they could legally answer their mobile phone.  Not safely, just legally.

I can almost guarantee if you called the driver out for this, the response would have been "but I indicated".

A classic failure of classic British infrastructure, and classic lack of attention from the classic driver.

That's pretty poor.

Looks rather dark for 5:20 pm.

Where I live the sequence is usually brake, slow to the point of almost stopping, indicate while turning.

Annoys the hell out of me
