Tories launch campaign against 'bike motorway' in West London

Cycle Superhighway 9 "will see pavements narrowed, trees cut down and pedestrians put at risk" say local Conservatives...

Local Conservatives have launched a campaign against a ‘bike motorway’ in West London, which they say would ‘damage its environment’.

Posting on Brentford and Isleworth Conservatives’ website, local politicians say:

“Labour plans that will see  pavements narrowed, trees cut down and pedestrians put at risk.

“The plans would bring chaos to the heart of Chiswick and damage its environment, shops and accessibility. “

They add that “pedestrians [will be] put in danger by speeding commuter cyclists “, and that “the £70m cost of the scheme could be better spent to benefit all residents, and prioritise cyclists, through the repair of potholes,  and better maintenance of our streets."

Fortunately for cyclists, Hounslow Council has 49 Labour seats and 11 Conservatives, meaning that Cycle Superhighway 9 is more likely to become a reality than not.

According to TfL, “Cycle Superhighway 9 (CS9) would transform roads in west Kensington, Hammersmith, Chiswick and Brentford town centre to make cycling and walking easier, safer, and more appealing.

“Roads on the alignment are currently dominated by motor traffic and can be intimidating and unpleasant places to walk and cycle. Walking and cycling are the healthiest and most sustainable ways to travel, either for whole trips or as part of longer journeys on public transport.

“By giving people space and time to cycle through the area more easily, and by providing improved crossing facilities for pedestrians, we can encourage more people to use these healthy and sustainable forms of transport while keeping other traffic moving. These improvements would help to make these streets work better for walking, cycling and public transport, so both individuals and the community as a whole can benefit.”

The route, between Kensington Olympia and Brentford, connects town centres in west London through Hammersmith and Chiswick.

A consultation on the westerly route is expected in the summer. The Hammersmith to Chiswick route is currently open for consultation and you can have your say here.

Lib dems have come out against it which is surely bigger news? I can't find the tweet now but this is what they previously said : http://www.chiswickw4.com/default.asp?section=info&page=cyclehighway011.htm

I work about 30m away from where that photo was taken. The biggest problem is the piss-poor consultation and the involvement of LB Hounslow who struggle to manage to organise anything really.

There was previously a cycle path across the wide pavement in front of the church on the right so it shouldn't be too much to design and construct correctly.

The local MP is Labour so no need to make pointless comments about chauffeur driven cars.

But there's chaos on the streets of Chiswick
Dublin, Dundee, Humberside
I wonder to myself
Burn down the townhouse
Hang the bastard Tories
Because the music that they constantly play
It says nothing to me about my life.

Simple solution to this, make a contraflow for the cars and convert one of the car lanes in to a protected cycle lane - trees and pedestrians kept safe... a win! LOL

"The plans would bring chaos to the heart of Chiswick and damage its environment ..... " say local Tory politicians.

Of course, I had quite forgotten that the heart of Chiswick is currently a shining beacon of environmental health and an orderly paradise for residents and commuters.  How silly of me.

We can't have cyclists putting pedestrians at risk.  Drivers do a much better job of it, so we should leave it them.

Can't hold up their chauffeur driven journeys from their publicly funded London flat to their place of part time employment now can we?

Irrespective of whether they're being dicks or not, they're councillors, not MPs , and get an allowance, not a salary. They generally - if not always - live locally - certainly true of my local councillors, of all persuasions.

Living or working in the local authority area is a statutory requirement. However it only applies at the time of election, and there's nothing to stop a councillor moving out of the area, or even out of the country, and still claiming their allowances (except the six month rule, which is a rare joy at the level of London Boroughs).

The use of the phrase 'bike motorway' is emotive and dishonest. All the key features of motorways - six lanes, speeds of 70mph, the use of motors - don't apply.

Get it right: it's a lie.

"Emotive and dishonest" claims by conservative politicians, eh? I think we need to find £350m per week to sort that out...   3
