Some highlights from across the site after another week on two wheels

1. Dear miss of the day: close pass with a deer 

Near Miss of the Day has so far featured trucks, cars, vans, buses, taxis, motorbikes, tractors, a mobile home, a bin lorry and even a police car – but this is our first ruminant. Nigel recorded the footage while riding to collect his car from the garage after work this week. Deer-y me!

2. Giro d’Italia Stage 7: Simon Yates retains overall lead as Ireland’s Sam Bennett takes first Grand Tour stage win

Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) outsprinted Elia Viviani (Quick-Step Floors) to take stage seven of the 2018 Giro d’Italia. Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) finished safely in the bunch and retained the overall lead.

3. Sean Conway breaks Europe cycle record

Riding from Cabo da Roca in Portugal to Ufa in Russia, Conway took nine hours off the previous mark to finish in under 25 days despite facing strong headwinds in the final week.

4. Study finds 70% of London cyclists believe drivers mean them harm

A study into paranoia and urban cycling published in the journal Psychiatry Research found that 70 per cent of London cyclists believe drivers mean them harm. The findings are consistent with the stress-vulnerability model of everyday paranoia, which predicts an association between environments high in threat and the presence of paranoia.

5. Call for government to subsidise e-bikes to drive mass uptake

A number of MPs this week expressed their support for the Bicycle Association’s call for subsidies for e-bikes and e-cargo bikes to help kick-start public awareness, drive mass uptake and ensure the benefits of e-bikes are felt in the UK.

6. 3T Strada Pro brings 1x disc aero road bike to a lower price

This week 3T launched the Strada Pro, a complete bike with a SRAM Force 1 groupset and 3T wheels costing £4,850, making owning this radical new bike a little more accessible than the previously frameset-only Strada Team.

7. Video: Cyclist rides behind sprinting emus

At what point does riding with emus become chasing emus? This Australian off-road cyclist seems to be exploring that question as this video wears on. The cyclist and emus move along at speeds of up to 40km/h according to the on-screen graphic and then, after about a minute, the emus peel off through the trees.

8. MP who has called for tougher laws on dangerous cycling appointed London's Deputy Mayor for Transport

Heidi Alexander, the Labour Member of Parliament who last year called for tougher laws to be introduced against people who cycle dangerously, has been appointed by Sadiq Khan as his Deputy Mayor for Transport.

9. Greg Van Avermaet puts Tour de Yorkshire-winning ride on Strava

Van Avermaet posted his latest success to Strava earlier this week - Sunday’s fourth and concluding stage of the Tour de Yorkshire where the BMC Racing rider led the chasing group home behind escapee Stephane Rossetto of Cofidis to clinch the overall title.
