Cyclists in Glasgow bring workers a cuppa and cake to thank them for building cycle path

'Thank ypu' gesture accomanies serious message to City Council to consider cyclists when planning infrastructure...

Cycling campaigners and local residents in Glasgow yesterday brought tea, coffee and cakes to workers installing a cycle path in the south of the city to thank them for their efforts.

The workers were treated to rolls, cakes and tattie scones as well as biscuits under the initiative, which was organised by the Friends of South City Way campaign group.

Group organiser Joel Cooney said: “We were looking for a way to pay tribute to the great work being done by contractors and thought ‘who doesn’t like a cuppa?’

“It’s meant to be a bit of fun but it highlights the vital need for separated cycle paths on busy shopping streets like Victoria Road away from motor traffic.

"We believe the South City Way will provide this protection, enabling more people to feel confident enough to cycle here.”

Among those in attendance was Patrick Harvie, co-convenor of the Scottish Green Party.

He said “I was delighted to join up with other cycling campaigners to show our thanks to the people who are building new, high quality routes in Glasgow. This must be the way forward for Glasgow, if we want people to be safe enjoying the healthiest, cheapest, lowest carbon way of getting about.”

Iona Shepherd, co-convenor of GoBike, the Strathclyde Cycle Campaign commented “We are fully supportive of the cycle tracks going in on Victoria Road and hope that the full South City way demonstrates an equally safe space for people on bikes.

"We wanted to come out today to thank the people putting the lanes into the ground for us, and really enjoyed sharing a cup of tea and a roll with them.”

She urged Glasgow City Council to take cyclists' needs fully into account when planning future schemes.

"We would like to see all see schemes in Glasgow moving forward from here considering active travel similarly," she explained.

She added: "We have concerns that plans shortly to go public on Byres Road may not provide protection for people choosing to travel on bike, which would be a major step backwards in achieving a city-wide network that could allow people to consider choosing active travel.”

Probably not far from the truth. I can imagine somone literally phoning it in from the beer garden somewhere.

At least turn your auto-correct on.

This is one of the main problems with modern 'media'. We are literally drowning in it compared to decades ago but the flood has no quality control. Newspapers used to have properly trained and qualified journalists, magazines came out weekly or monthly and had proper editors. Modern media is just the equivalent of bloke down the pub shouting out what he knows. Well, it's either that or literally everyone seems to have copied the same article word for word.

I recently downloaded some scans of the old C64 and Speccy mags, Zzap64 and Crash. They look like some of the great literally works of our time compared to what passes for web journalism now. Quantity is definitely winning over quality everywhere.  Fast food for the hungry.

I think you're reading too much into it. There's some superbly written articles out there and I'd say that the general literacy level of people is growing at an unprecedented rate (e.g. kids these days are growing up and learning to express almost every thought into their phones).

I think the problem is just Road.cc being careless, drunk or turning off their spell checkers. The comments now have a higher standard of writing than the articles.

Quotes work fine if you are on the "old" site, but don't work on the new, dedicated mobile version of the site. I have literally just switched back to the new mobile site on my Android phone and neither Chrome nor Firefox show me comments. Switch back to the old site, no problems.

Exactly.  I keep having to request desktop site when browsing on my phone.  OK, it's just a second to do so but given the ubiquitous use of phones for browsing these days, a failure to enable a key feature seems rather daft.

i can’t stand the ‘new’ site, which is an off the shelf online marketing template with unbearable ads and obnoxious swipe controls and share links. Please end the experiment already.

And, for fuck's sake, when are you going to get around to enabling comments on your mobile site for Android?

Makes no difference.  Simply no comments on the mobile site.

I think it maybe a bit of try and see by using different browsers (including installing new ones ). Possibly turning off any adblockers.
I'm working on android 6.0.1 and Firefox.

Sorry road.cc, I'm finding more and more of these: three mistakes in your opening sentence. Can you spot them too?

'Thank ypu' gesture accomanies serious message tp City Council to consider cyclists when planning infrastructure...

All of which would have been picked up by running a simple spell-check over the text prior to submission, let alone - heaven forbid - actually reading what you've written. C'mon: kinda fundamental if you want to be taken seriously as a site with good content, no?

Ypu just doesn’t get any respect after all that hard digging. #thankypu
