Elia Viviani wins Vuelta Stage 10, Simon Yates keeps overall lead

Elia Viviani of Quick Step Floors has won his second stage of this year's Vuelta, taking a convincing win in the sprint at the end of today's Stage 10. Simon Yates of Mitchelton-Scott retains a one-second lead in the General Classification over Movistar's Alejandro Valverde.

Today's 177-kilometre stage from Salamanca to Fermoselle always looked likely to end in a bunch sprint, though Team Sky's Polish national champion Michal Kwiatkowski tried to spoil the party as he launched an attaack on an uphull drag inside the closing kilometre.

He was caught with 300 metres remaining however, with Italian champion Viviani given a perfect leadout and winning by a couple of bike lengths from world champion Peter Sagan of Bora Hansgrohe, with Giacomo Nizzolo of Treg-Segafredo third.

Viviani's win capped a successful afternoon for Quick Step Floors with Julian Alaphilippe winning in Bristol following a fast-paced Stage 3 of the OVIO Energy Tour of Britain.
