Today’s near miss really emphasises the vulnerability of cyclists with several tonnes of timber looming over them as they veer about in the huge draft of air caused by the truck (and trailer) that is carrying it all.
The incident occurred on July 20, just before midday.
“This one is probably the scariest one I've had this year,” writes Jonny. “I was riding back home along the A5 from Llangollen towards Chirk. The weather was damp and because of this I had my rear light on so no excuse for not seeing me.
“I reported it to North Wales Police using Operation Snap. The driver has had to attend a driver awareness course, which has meant him losing a half day’s wage and £100 to attend the course. Hopefully he or she learnt something.”
> Near Miss of the Day turns 100 - Why do we do the feature and what have we learnt from it?
Over the years road.cc has reported on literally hundreds of close passes and near misses involving badly driven vehicles from every corner of the country – so many, in fact, that we’ve decided to turn the phenomenon into a regular feature on the site. One day hopefully we will run out of close passes and near misses to report on, but until that happy day arrives, Near Miss of the Day will keep rolling on.
If you’ve caught on camera a close encounter of the uncomfortable kind with another road user that you’d like to share with the wider cycling community please send it to us at info [at] road.cc or send us a message via the road.cc Facebook page.
If the video is on YouTube, please send us a link, if not we can add any footage you supply to our YouTube channel as an unlisted video (so it won't show up on searches).
Please also let us know whether you contacted the police and if so what their reaction was, as well as the reaction of the vehicle operator if it was a bus, lorry or van with company markings etc.

That was terrible driving by the person behind the wheel of the truck. The driver clearly misjudged the oncoming traffic. Hanging back until the road was clear would've been the right thing to do. It's of note how the driver of the Range Rover that passes just before shows how an overtake is done safely and correctly; more than 2m passing distance by the looks of things.
That's a lovely stretch of road. I drove along there on my motorbike a month or so back. It was such a nice day I took it really easy and enjoyed the ride. It's a lovely scenic stretch of road, but not one you want to try and hurry along.
It’s the way you can see the effect of the wind draft on the cyclists. Not just close, but far too fast. Awful. This video should be used when training HGV drivers of how dangerous close passes really are.
From a personal perspective, If I was the camera bike rider, and I’d clocked the truck approaching from behind, I’d have pulled up to riding abreast with the rider in front, the truck driver never should have made that pass, so I would have been inclined to have made it impossible. The driver was 100 percent at fault here, but that counts for little if you get clipped.
That's a lot of Ifs, Captain Hindsight.
Most of the vehicles passing showed little regard to the cyclists, by carrying far too much speed. Its still not good when a vehicle come passed at 60mph
Slow down, just like you'd when passing horse and rider.
The driver should slow down, yes.
The point I was trying to succinctly address (to Judge Dreadful, not you) is a fairly common one on these threads, along the lines of:
'from my perspective, having seen the video, if I was dropped into that situation, right now, I'd do something different'...
Well, yeah. So would the rider in the video. The thing is, that pass was really fucking quick - too quick to do anything about. Most of these are, despite the Billy Bigbollocks comments about how omniscient posters would do something different.
This isn't just aimed at Judge Dreadful because plenty of posters are full of it in these comments, but this example is particularly silly. If you'd anticipated what was about to happen, and how long the vehicle was, and how fast it was going and how tightly it was going to cut in, you'd have pulled alongside the other rider. WTF?
If you're in possession of the facts before something's happened, put road.cc down and go and save orphans or play the lottery.
If you think you could have pulled alongside as the facts were dawning, very quickly, on you because the lorry was mid-overtake, have a word with yourself, because if you'd tried that you'd've got yourself squashed.
And a big truck travelling quite fast, even with hindsight I'd not be trying to put myself any nearer the damn thing, thats one of those they are coming through hell or high water overtakes
Sounds good in theory, but doesn’t always work. I had a similar (but not quite as bad) pass from a tractor with a massive trailer. I'd clocked it approaching and moved to primary as there was oncoming traffic, then when clear moved over to secondary. The tractor passed and initially gave me room but then blasted its horn before pulling sharply in nearly catching me with the trailer, despite no oncoming traffic.
Mind you, I tucked in behind it and drafted it for a mile bagging a strava PR, so not all bad!

If you think that is the solution, then you did not understand the problem.
Not sure if serious.
Pulling into the path of a truck with a closing speed of 40mph would be suicidal. 100kg of flesh and bike would have done nothing to make the pass "impossible" but would have made it lethal.
And that's a highly trained professional.
From watching the video, I would say that your statement above should really be a question.
And that's a highly trained professional? There, FTFY
I wonder if those at SWP, who thought this worthy of a slight tap on the wrist, would think differently if it were their own children enjoying such trivial driving standards or another criminal wave a sledgehammer near their heads in a threatening manner, probably not because these fuckwits are clueless!
Doesn't send any message to the driver or others in the slightest, driver wants banning from operating anything over 50cc
I thought the worst bit was at the end, when the cyclist in the distance seemed to get the same treatment.
Lorrycock clearly has no idea how long his vehicle is. It started off 'ok' but tapered down to very close one.
That was really bad ... and then the trailer comes through! Terrifying.
ride central, so you can move away from near pass. A complete dickhead truck driver with no care for vulnerable riders
