road.cc Exclusive! Nocturne Series expands with new races in Edinburgh and Blackpool

Night time racing promises mix of top pros, team challenge, and folding bikes

London, Edinburgh and Blackpool will all host night time bike races this summer as the Nocturne series confirms new race dates today.

The Edinburgh Nocturne will kick things off on 30th May followed by Smithfield on 6th June with the Blackpool Nocturne taking place on 1st August. All three events promise a blend of top class racing and entertainment for the watching crowds. Nocturne organiser, James Pope is confident that race fans will get to see some top names in action.

“We are in the process of signing up some well known international pros to take on the strong British teams and we are specifically billing the Blackpool Nocturne as a post Tour de France criterium with some of the stars of the Tour expected to race” commented Pope.

The Edinburgh Nocturne will take place around the Grassmarket area and includes a Belgian style cobbled finish straight and short climb. Smithfield will continue to take place around the historic Smithfield Market in the heart of the capital and the Blackpool Nocturne will be raced around the north shore promenade and Blackpool Tower.

Each event will follow roughly the same format with an elite race featuring UK pro teams plus continental wildcard entries. There will also be a supporting programme at all the events featuring Rollapaluza roller racing, a team challenge and the very popular folding bike race. All three events will also have their own feature races, the Smithfield Nocturne also has an All Star race and a longest fixie skid competition.

Each Nocturne is a stand alone event and there are no plans to turn the three Nocturnes into a race series at present.

“Our focus is on quality and not quantity” confirmed Event Director James Pope. “We have three events in exciting city locations that span the UK and our vision is to establish these as the premier criterium events on the calendar, events that blend entertainment and performance sport.”
