Taxis outside Glasgow Central Station (via StreetView)Glasgow cabbie given warning after punching cyclist
A Glasgow cab driver has been issued with a warning after he got out of his vehicle and punched a cyclist.
The Evening Times reports that after Robert Cunningham picked up two passengers outside Central Station, a pair of cyclists – one male, one female – pulled up ahead of him at a set of traffic lights.
He then overtook them and was said to have caused them to take evasive action. Cunningham then got out of his cab and punched the male cyclist in the face.
He denied this after being called to appear before a panel.
“That is just lies,” he said. “I have already paid £150 in damages. I had parked outside Central Station and picked up two visitors from England and was taking them to their hotel.
“Two cyclists came up behind me and stopped at the red traffic lights. I was going to let them go ahead when the lights changed but the girl pulled to the left and the man stayed in the middle of the road.
“I signalled to him to move into the side so I could pass him. The man then kicked my cab. I questioned him before he threatened me.
“He came towards me and I put my hands out to defend myself. I have been driving private hire cars and taxis for at least 22 years.”
Councillor Gary Gray said: “When you got out of your car to confront the cyclist you could have been seen to be aggressive.”
He asked what Cunningham had learned from the experience.
“I will not get involved in future,” he replied. “I don’t want this to happen again. Nobody has every kicked my cab before.”
Councillor John Kane added: “Our taxi drivers are ambassadors. You are telling us that two visitors from England are away back home, telling their family and friends of this experience.”

The poor little poppet is probably losing sleep over the pedestrianisation and cycle lanes in Sauchiehall Street thet are going to lose him business, then to have a couple of cyclists rub it in was probably one straw too many.
"I have already paid £150 in damages" oh really? Why was that then?
For politely signalling the cyclist to move to one side? Yeah I bet.
"Don't do it again, or we'll - er - warn you again! But next time, we'll wag a stern finger too"
If this is the same guy, he seems to have a bit of form for this sort of thing. How many chances is he going to get?

And he seems to have learnt twice now not to get out of his car, the scary thing is he seems to believe the lies he tells!

That simply doesn't scan, behind you but you want to pass them? He's clearly trying to cover up what he really did, I'm glad they didn't buy it.

Translated: "I honked my horn and drove up onto his back wheel to bully him into the gutter - when this failed and he maintained his position in the lane I decided to disregard his refusal and pass him anyway by shoving him into the kerb with my car. As a response to my life-endangering maneuvre the cyclist hit my side door, whereupon the red mist descended and I got out of my car to pick a fight.
So, the cabbie got a warning for punching someone in the face? Is that a normal sentence for such a case?
It was council panel meeting, presumably about his fitness to hold a cab licence.
Not a court of law, just an allegation.

Sadly it’s no camera, no ride, for me now. But not just for evidence; I was once threatened with a weapon when out on a ride, when I pointed out to the assailant that he was being filmed, he put the weapon away and retreated. I'm convinced he would have used it if I hadn’t had a camera.
We get the full statement of the taxi driver, but not from his passengers or the cyclists, and I bet their versions are very significantly different from the driver's. Cyclists don't just kick taxis without some serious provocation, so what really happened?
I wonder if it might have something to do with way he “signalled him”?
