Man charged with causing death of Co Down cyclist Gavin Moore

Hing Tong Cheung has also been charged with causing serious injury to a second member of North Down Cycling Club in July 2017 incident

A man has been charged with causing the death by dangerous driving of North Down Cycling Club committee member Gavin Moore in July 2017.

Hing Tong Cheung, aged 61 and from Bangor, has also been charged with causing serious injury to another cyclist, Gareth Boyle.

The pair were on a group ride on Bangor Road in Newtownards when they were involved in a collision with a Hyundai 4x4.

Mr Moore, aged 40, died in hospital from his injuries, while Mr Boyle, who sustained broken bones, needed surgery. Two other members of the group were also treated at hospital for their injuries.

According to the Belfast Telegraph, Cheung did not appear at a preliminary enquiry hearing at Newtownards Magistrates’ Court, with defence council Chris Holmes arguing that the case was not ready to be sent to Crown Court.

The application was approved by District Judge Mark Hamill, who has listed the case for next Tuesday 12 February.
