Irish cyclist dies after hitting parked motorbike during road race

Police are investigating the death of Seán Lynch who died when he hit a motorbike during a road race in County Wexford last weekend.

The Irish Times reports that 34-year-old Lynch, who raced with the Drogheda Wheelers Club, crashed on the main road from Adamstown to Carrickbyrne while racing in the Frank O’Rourke Memorial at about 1.40pm last Sunday.

He was treated at the scene before being taken to Wexford General Hospital. He was pronounced dead on Thursday morning.

In a statement on Facebook, Drogheda Wheelers said: “It is with great sadness that Drogheda Wheelers Cycling Club announce the untimely death of its member, Sean Lynch following a tragic accident.

“The club would like to take this opportunity to thank all the medical staff who cared for Sean following the accident and expresses its gratitude to Wexford Wheelers Cycling Club for its support during this difficult time. Drogheda Wheelers would like to extend its sincere sympathies to the Lynch Family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.”

Club secretary, Gerry Campbell added: "He was very, very mad about the sport, just unbelievably committed to it. All he had in life was the sport and he quickly became a very popular member of the club."
