Highways England refuses to pause abandonment of Queensbury Tunnel even as council applies for funding to turn it into cycle route

West Yorkshire Combined Authority requests £23m to save tunnel and build cycle route

The West Yorkshire Combined Authority has applied for £23m to turn the Queensbury Tunnel into a "high quality cycling route”. It has also urged the government to act swiftly before Highways England’s work to abandon the tunnel has progressed too far.

The Queensbury Tunnel was closed more than 60 years ago and is currently managed by Highways England on behalf of the Department for Transport (DfT). However, the organisation wants to permanently close the tunnel due to perceived safety concerns.

Others believe the tunnel should become a key part of the proposed Bradford-Halifax Greenway cycle route, otherwise known as CityConnect 3, which would link Bradford District and Calderdale.

The 1.4-mile long disused railway tunnel would flatten the route enough that it could be used by commuters. A Sustrans study estimated the project could bring £37.6m in social, economic and tourism benefits over a 30-year period.

In October, Highways England ceased inspection and repair works at the tunnel on safety grounds following flooding caused by heavy rain.

Contractors then started filling in the No 2 Shaft of the tunnel. The Queensbury Tunnel Society, which is campaigning for the tunnel to become a cycle route, described the move as an act of “ruthless vandalism.”

The Telegraph and Argus reports that the West Yorkshire Combined Authority has now applied for £23m from the government, which it says would fund, “remediation of the tunnel itself, a high quality cycling and walking route through the tunnel, and connections to the routes into Bradford and Halifax centres."

However, the bid also warns: “The opportunity to deliver the scheme is finely balanced; without certainty over funding being available to carry out further development work and deliver the scheme, measures to ensure public safety may progress to the point where the opportunity is lost.”

Tourism ! Halifax and Bradford ? Have you seen the shambles of the cycle lanes around the area. A thin green strip that starts and stops at random. There is no safe infrastructure to get actually to and from the tunnel. If the council's were going to widen all the linked roads and put separated lanes in then maybe it would be used. This won't happen.

Having never visited the area I have to defer to your knowledge, could this not be a catalyst to something much bigger though?

It is true that the cycle infrastructure, including the new and expensive stuff, certaintly aint Copenhagen quality. But with the tunnel, it is fully intended to be just a part of a quality route between Halifax and Bradford that would be direct and relatively flat. It has a LOT of promise, there just needs to be political will from Highways England and from the car-lovers in the local councils.

Any cycling infrastructure is great but one that enables tourism and local people to commute by bike is priceless. Priceless to individuals that improve their health and reduce costs by getting to work on their bike. Priceless to the car drivers who will have an easier journey due to the cars removed from the route by the cycle commuters. Priceless also as it will showcase the industrial heritage of the UK that through the ingenuity of its people changed the world.

As someone who lived in the area up until I was 40,its hardly the most scenic of places. If it was out in open countryside, yes spend the money. But this area is clogged with traffic and riding to it would be hellish.

I love cycling through tunnels! That would be such a cool cycle route if they manage to get it sorted.

The important thing for Highways England is clearly to prevent the tunnel being used for cycling or walking
