Seven-year-old who raised £200k cycling for Haiti wins Just Giving Award

Remember Charlie Simpson? He’s the young man who provided a great example to us all last year when, aged just seven, he decided he was going to try and raise £500 for Unicef UK’s appeal to help victims of the earthquake in Haiti by cycling round his local park.

In the end, Charlie raised more than £200,000, and this evening he has been named Most Popular Fundraiser at the Just Giving Awards, organised by the website that hosted his fundraising page as well as those of many others raising money for good causes.

BBC technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones, who was one of the judges, tweeted this picture of a smiling Charlie, who is also nominated in the Young Fundraiser category, picking up his award.

On its own Twitter feed, Just Giving revealed that in his acceptance speech, Charlie said, “Thank you to everyone who donated - I'm happy!"

Charlie wasn’t the only cyclist to be recognised in the awards tonight. Former England rugby captain Lawrence Dallaglio was named Celebrity Fundraiser of the year for his Cycle Slam.

That saw him undertake a gruelling 2,888km ride from Rome to Edinburgh, taking in the other Six Nations host cities of Paris, London, Cardiff and Dublin on the way.
