BikeTubes - We'll do it again, says LCC

Scheme to beat strikes hailed a success

The organisers of the London BikeTube scheme say they will organise more of them, even if there’s no Underground dispute.

The London Cycling Campaign (LCC) is hailing the BikeTube idea a success. More than 100 cyclists rode to work collectively from various meeting points, giving the chance for novice cyclists to experience London traffic in the safety of the group.

BikeTubing was set up in response to the Underground strikes of this week, during which millions of commuters had to find alternative ways of getting to work. It is estimated there was a threefold increase in cycling during the period.

A website was also set up to coordinate the BikeTube scheme, and organisers say it received more than 300,000 hits in the days running up to the strike.

LCC chief executive Koy Thomson said, "We'll do everything we can to ensure this surge in cycling becomes permanent, including organising more BikeTubes, even when there's no disruption."
