CORE Bike Show: Campagnolo prices announced + Vittoria, Selle Italia, Deda & Cinelli

The much anticipated prices for EPS: better be sitting down…

The prices for Campagnolo's new EPS components have been released at the CORE Bike Show this morning.

The Campagnolo Super Record EPS component groupset will be selling for £3,800 when it goes on sale in the United Kingdom shortly. Its slightly less titanium-bolted and carbon-slotted junior brother in the hierarchy will be £3,140.

As we posted back at the announcement of the long-awaited electronically shifting parts here and when we first rode an EPS Pinarello Dogma 2 bike in Italy later in the Autumn here, the new Campagnolo gears may have been a long time in development but they seem to work well enough that even the most die-hard of traditionalists have said, "Mmm, worth a look maybe" if comments after the stories are anything to go by.

Of course, the price is what everyone's been waiting for and this is what we said about that in November when we were still anticipating the worst: "for Record…we wouldn't rule out a list price of £2,500. Super Record is going to be at least £3,000, and quite probably £3,500." So we thought we were anticipating the worst but it looks like Campagnolo are shooting high buoyed by the enthusiastic reception EPS has received.

The groupset consists of the EPS-specific Ergopower levers, front and rear gear mechanisms and the DTI battery with its interface module. And then there are the unchanged non-EPS parts that continue in parallel as part of the standard mechanical groupsets; the crankset and bottom bracket bearings.

Cinelli brings back the 1a, only it's called the A1

In other news from the CORE Bike Show where road.cc is currently pacing the rooms meeting manufacturers and distributors, Cinelli is showing the standard 1" quill stem that it used to make and has now reinstated following the resurgent interest in 'classic' road frames with a threaded steerer. The stem used to be called model 1a when it was last in the range back in the 1990s following a 20-year life. It's now back as model A1 but it looks identical other than a better, glossier anodised finish. Price is £59.99 in sizes 9-13cm.

There's also a newer version of Cinelli's NeoMorph carbon bars called 'XL' to signify compatibility with the newer road stems. Weight is a feathery 230 grams and as before there's a wide range of anatomic formings to suit various hand positions. Overall though, the effect is shallow and short in the reach which will suit smaller people beautifully. Colours: white or black and the price is £189.99.

Meanwhile, Italian handlebar rivals Deda are showing a new mini-triathlon bar extension reminiscent of the late lamented (by who? - Ed) Spinaci bars made by Cinelli back in the 1990s and banned for racing by the UCI. This Carbon Blast Clip-On Tri Bar won't any more UCI-legal and looks completely different being made of moulded carbon-fibre with a rubbery briding piece but it will suit cyclists who simply want to bolt something quickly onto a conventional road set-up for an event where a comfortable aerodynamic position is an advantage. Price £199.99.

Selle Italia have a new Gel Flow version of their existing and popular Max SLR model which should suit long distance comfort fans. Price as ever with Selle Italia saddles is on the high side at £99.99 but the construction quality looks as good as ever and, as we always say, "What price comfort?"

Vittoria have upgraded the construction of the Vittoria Diamante Pro tyre and it now has a 'Radiale' suffix to reflect the alignment of the new 220 threads-per-inch fabric in the carcass. According to Vittoria that should result in better 'ride feel' and puncture resistance with lower weight 'under 200 grams.' Price is £39.99 each.

More mundane but still on everyone's minds considering the dark evenings and wet roads, SKS have added a reflective stripe to both sides of their 'Bluemels' model of wider, everyday road mudguards. Price is £32.99 per pair and they're available any time now.

Don't count on that Argy, remember they're struggling for brass in the depths of Campagnolo so they'll be fleecing as many OAP's for years to come as they can for as long as they can!

Rumour has it that Mr Campagnolo has had to turn down this years wage bonus of 3.6 million shares in a similar move to that of the RBS chief exec... I personally say good on him. I hear instead he asked his lacky for a new sram red (2012?/2013? Have 'they' decided yet?!) groupset to go on his very special secretive Mclaren specialized that he keeps under lock and key !!! 4

Thanks Nick, evidently and obviously that's why they're there - there's still no getting away from the fact that they don't half look like a come down with reflectors though!!

They could've bought some lovely flat pedals from Shimano and had a really fun time?! 36

LoL, too funny.

They look great, but massively overpriced! Maybe they will come down in price in 2013/14? 39

What a load of utter plonkers Rodney! No doubt soon the marketing monkeys will be in over drive and Campag will be luring people with words like 'light weight' (wallets after shelling out)... further more...

CHECK OUT THOSE PEDALS on the show bike - the un'lucky' owner's spent all their brass on the groupset!!! 7

Finally to all the people who LOVE Campag check out how your beloved company president is so considerate in his pricing structures:

Current company president Valentino Campagnolo himself even admits that while dearly loved by its fans, Campagnolo's future depends on the success of cutting edge products like this and can't afford a high-profile hit to its well-earned reputation.

"We want to develop this technology even more in the future," he said. "We are confident that these days are very tough days with the economic crisis also affecting bicyclists. 44 Also, we suffer from this. 44 44 44 44 44 44 44 44 44 44

But we try to manage the company while keeping costs under control. 37 14 44 44 44 44

We are pushing hard to develop and invest for our future and in fact, never in the past has Campagnolo developed such a tremendous amount of new products because we invest in our future".... USING OUR OVER INFLATED MARKED UP RETAIL PRICES SO WISELY!!!

There you go - rant over!!

The bike was set up with those pedals so everyone in their street shoes could try out the EPS gears on the static trainer.

Having posted that, the latest word is that not all the Campagnolo importers will be selling to dealers at the same prices. One we spoke to yesterday reckons that the Super Record EPS price would come out more like £3,500 if it was one of 'their' dealers so, as ever, it will be worth searching around. Having said that, it's also apparent that the entire 2012 UK allocation of EPS is 'sold out' with dealers. Basically, supply is limited bearing in mind that markets like China with booming economies are hoovering up the blingiest bike kit.

Sold out!!?? who's buying these stuff? The only person who can persuade me to buy this set of groupo is Victoria Pendleton and that is on condition that he joins me on a riding holiday 3 3 3 3 3

and people say Di2 is pricey!! holy cow!

A few things on this one for me..as much as i admire Campy gear in its cable form, Electronic isn't the direction i thought they would choose. In my eyes, Campy is all about the essence of cycling, man and mechanical engineering in a classic sense. I am not a campy fan, never have been (Marmite) and i honestly think that anyone that chooses that group over Shimano's electronic offerings is absolutely mental! if they were £1k less , YES please...but £3800....MAD!

also, as an italian car owner...i can say wholeheartedly...Italians + electrics = headaches ahead 1 *cue insults*

I'm gonna buy a £200 frame from Ribble and a £150 set of wheels, then put an EPS groupset on it. 3

Actually, I'm going to look at that, think "HOW MUCH?!" and then spend the money on 10 riding holidays which will improve my performance more than a groupset can.

Looks like about a £1500 premium over mechanical Record/Super Record for EPS.

Update:

According to Chicken Cycles

Super Record EPS = £3799
Record EPS = £3139
Super Record = £2235
Super Record Ti-Carbon = £2192
Record = £1799

Don't know about two years time but word is that next year Chorus won't go EPS but Athena will instead.

@Cat1commuter - I'm thinking more about the premium between Record EPS and Super-record mechanical, as well as between Ultegra DI2 and Dura-Ace mechanical. If I was in the market for a top-end group, I think this is where I would be focusing my choice.

What's the list price for the mechanical Record and Super Record? Just wondering what the EPS premium above the mechanical groups is.
