Pat McQuaid video interview part one: UCI president talks doping

McQuaid tells Daniel Lloyd where he believes cycling is in the war against the cheats

Pat McQuaid has outlined to GCN’s Daniel Lloyd how he believes cycling is a cleaner sport now than it was during the Lance Armstrong era, which the UCI president puts as “ten and fifteen years ago” – although the last of the seven Tour de France wins the American was stripped of was in 2005, and the United States Anti Doping Agency insisted he doped after his return to the sport in 2009.

In the first part of a video interview, Lloyd asked McQuaid how current riders can convince the press and public that they were clean, when Armstrong himself had maintained he hadn’t doped, and asks whether the UCI had any plans for how riders could show themselves to be 100 per cent clean.

It’s a great question; watch the video and judge for yourself how well McQuaid answered it.

Pat Mcquaid says the sport has credability now and is in a healthy position. A good follow-up question would have been - if that is so then why is it struggling to attract sponsors for teams and why are historic races in Spain and Italy etc struggling to be viable?

I wouldn't believe Pat McQuaid if he told me the time by my own watch.
