Witness appeal after cyclist killed on Teeside

Two vans also involved in fatal incident in Billingham yesterday afternoon

Police on Teeside have issued an appeal for witnesses after a male cyclist was killed yesterday following a collision that also involved two vans.

The victim, aged in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident, which took place on Haverton Hill Road, Billingham shortly before 4.40pm yesterday, reports the Evening Gazette.

The vans involved in the incident, which took place near the entrance to the Johnson Matthey site, were described as a white Vauxhall Vivaro and a white Mistubishi L200 pick-up style van.

The driver of the latter was described as being in a stable condition after he was taken to Middlesbrough’s James Cook University Hospital, while the driver of the Vauxhall, also male, was unhurt.

Inspector Lee Rukin from the Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit, which investigates road traffic collisions for both Cleveland and Durham Constabularies, commented:  “We know this industrial area would have been busy at the time with people coming to and leaving work.

“I would urge anyone who was in the area around the time of the collision to get in touch with Cleveland Police on the non emergency number 101, quoting event 203736.”

It is a bit of a horrible road. Works traffic from the adjacent industrial estates hammer along it to reach the A19, it does have a segregated cycle path but it is of low quality and subservient to all the side turnings, lay-bys etc.

It seems churlish to point out a spelling mistake in a serious article but the location is Teesside, ie beside the river Tees.

Pronounced Tee-side but spelt Teesside.
