Bournemouth council leader Vikki Slade has said that cyclists are being given “one more weekend” to “behave fairly and responsibly” when using the promenade otherwise they will be banned.
Cycling is banned on Bournemouth promenade during July and August, but permitted the rest of the time.
However, the space is shared with pedestrians and there are regularly calls for the ban to be extended.
The Bournemouth Echo reports than an increase in the number of riders during lockdown has increased tensions.
“We are asking that the Prom is used sensibly,” said Slade during a Facebook Q&A session this week.
“There have been issues with cyclists going too fast and there being too many of them. I’m hopeful that now people can move a bit further that that might change.
“We want to give it one more weekend to see if people can behave fairly and responsibly and I have asked police to carry out a few more patrols in spots where people have been cycling in groups and cycling too fast.
“It’s frightening for people if you are cycling along at high speed and there have been accidents. I don’t want to have to take cyclists off the Prom.”
Councillor Lewis Allison, cabinet member for communities, added: “We want to ensure that local people have the opportunity to use the promenade for both cycling and for walking and running.
“We would ask local residents to act in a responsible manner that allows social distancing though we are aware that shared use can make social distancing challenging.”

Asked a friend whether he commuted using the prom and his reply was, "no, you have to renew your drive train 'every 5 min' as the sand and salt destroys it".
This is ridiculous. There are signs every 30 yards saying keep dogs on leads. People either have no lead at all and dogs running wild or they have a 50ft fishing line lead right across the front. There was a bloke weaving left and right on a one wheeled electric unicycle type thing this morning doing 20 miles an hour in a full face helmet. I've seen groups doing 35mph on electric skateboards. It is a joke. And I cycle on it no later than 7am, god knows what it's like during the day.
There have been no cyclist - pedestrian collisions on the prom, only angry anecdotal observations from prejudiced people in any Echo article where they can distract from news that is about driving badly or congestion. It is the same few ignorant morons that stir up the comments, most likely one of the many motor traders from the area fearful for the potential depreciation in customers. This council, and all those that have preceeded, fit the stereotype of the area...retired, old, out of touch, and definitely anti cyclist. They make token gestures towards provision of cycling infrastructure only when their hand is forced. They have made no plans to increase space for cycling as per the Gov current advice, yet this town is one of the most congested in the country. Drivers blame cyclists for traffic, the pathetic white painted 75cm gutter crawling bike lanes apparently stealing a car lane or a cyclist holding up car despite moving faster than the traffic. I get a near miss on almost every bike trip in this area, and am anxious before every outing that this might be the day that an ignorant moron kills me. Yet Vikki Slade gives cyclists one more month to prove that we self control how many of us use the prom because drivers who have clogged the roads to walk there are comp!aining. It's the same in the New Forest, animals get killed by speeding drivers but locals put tacks in the road to dismount cyclists.

go and cycle on the road beside the airport, see what the drivers say. GET ON THE CYCLE LANE! but in this scenario, none of them are using the cycle lane so adeuqately provided to help with congestion. So is it ok for us to tell THEM to get on the cycle lane instead of holding bikers and cyclists up? works both ways.

Most I am sure will say "fair play to him", none would hesitate to press any advantage they could find, as you have clearly done, but Some of them are bound to be/get upset about it, remembering how put-upon, hard-pressed and generally downtrodden they all are!
im basically making a comparison. Thats a 60 mph and 40 mph road along there. The shared path is crap for pretty much the whole way, bar two bits at each end. So i get very defensive and angered when i hear or see motorists becoming angry at cyclists for using the road, when i know theres a perfectly good reason to instead of the shared path[ legality aside]. So when i come up on that road and i'm forced to barely, ten mph? i create a parralel situation in my head. Become a non cycling motorist, see cyclist not on ''cycle lane'' slowing me down, beep horn, yell at rider to get out the way. The parralel is that as a cycling biker and motorist, i know all too well how annoying it is to be told to do something that isnt safe, and especially when im breaking no law. The irony there, is that a cyclist is still moving along at a good average speed on the road, whereas in traffic, the non cycling motorist is stuck at a speed far far lower, caused by the sheer quantity of cars. I therefore find it approipriate to point out that there is a similar situation where cars get in my way as a biker and force me to a lower speed, just as they are by driving their cars on the road when someone is cycling on it. I am defending the cyclists by using a parralel to explain how it isnt fair to yell at a cyclist unless they are saying its ok for me to yell at them in the second scenario, as shown in the video.

Your last video perfectly illustrates why priority for a cycle path across a preexisting junction doesn't work without major modifications, in that case removing several metres of garden, don't work.
you can tell even when i ride up to it, going slow right? you just can't see whats coming. Theres nothing but a teeny yellow sign there to tell you you have to slow right down and give way. I said this to the contractors, but they ignored it. There should be massive great signs to grab your attention so you dont just pull out in front of riders. It would also save some other cyclists who rightly ignores the path from being abused for being on the road. Which we can see will happen, because non cycling motorists are very ignorant.

I trust the council leader will ensure that pedestrians don't wander about, three abreast, weaving as they walk due to them being completely engrossed with their phones, and the council leader makes sure that dog walkers don't create a hazard with their fucking ridiculous 14ft leads to 'control' their dogs.
I also hope the council leader will ensure that social distancing measures are adhered to, by the pedestrians. I am sick and tired of shouting a friendly warning when on shared paths, only for the fuckwits to stay two abreast, what the fuck is all that about?

i used to work in a bike shop here too and they're having to open 6 days a week plus working into the evenings with the shop shut, just to meet demand for repairs.
What exactly is he expecting? That cyclists do quick count up and decide for themselves if there is room for one more?
Why not get off your arse and organise the promenade seperating peds and cyclists or some sort of 1 way system. No that would require effort - much easier to ban them all.
As others have said, make decisions on evidence, not opinion. There doesn't seem to be any evidence of collisions between cyclists and pedestrians, and as DfT research into shared spaces in Europe found, both pedestrians and cyclists adapted their behaviour and if there were collisions, they were vanishingly rare.
Cyclists can't prove that they aren't a threat, as it's impossible to prove a negative, but the people claiming that they are a threat could prove it, if the evidence exists, so let them produce it. No evidence; no ban.
Any ban would be based on prejudice, bias and opinion, from people like the old biddies sabotaging cycle paths.
Check out any article or letter to the editor in the local rag https://www.bournemouthecho.co.uk that mentions bicycles, directly or tangentially, and the foam speckled rantings of the local gammons are much in evidence. The usual dog whistle bingo comments: road tax, insurance, number plates, hi viz, too fast, too slow, get off the road, get off the pavement etc.
Unfortunately, I expect that any decision about access to the prom will be based on opinion, not evidence.
I know they're mainly keyboard warriors and the occasional troll, but the prospensity for "x should be banned" "confiscate and crush" - quite drastic measures for minor issues - is quite concerning. It's all a bit "boys will be boys" when it comes to the many reports of motor vehicle misdeeds.
I just did a search for "bicycle" and the first twenty hits are mostly reporting bicycle theft, not a fleck of foam anywhere.

As cargobike says, improve the roafs with temporary lanes.
Perhaps the councillors could take some space away from cars on the adjacent roads like some other cities are doing, rather than demonising one particular group. If there have been accidents, as is alledged in the article, it would be all ovr the website, yet I can't find one story to back that up during lockdown. How odd.....
