Cyclist suffers serious head injuries after crash with e-bike rider in Glasgow

Police say e-bike rider may be unaware of extent of other cyclist’s injuries

A cyclist has sustained serious head injuries following a crash in Glasgow last Thursday involving an e-bike rider whom police have urged to get in touch so they can establish the exact circumstances of what happened.

Police Scotland say that the incident happened on a shared use path on Langcroft Road in Govan at around 5.50pm last Thursday, 8 September, 2022.

The victim, a man aged 55, was taken by ambulance to the nearby Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

According to officers, the e-bike rider spoke to the ambulance crew who stopped as they passed the scene, and subsequently rode off and may not be aware of the extent of the other cyclist’s injuries.

Inspector Andrew Thomson from Glasgow’s Road Policing Unit, said: “A man has sustained serious head injuries as a result of this collision, so it is important we establish exactly how the crash occurred.

“Both cyclists stopped, however, the rider of the e-bike left a short time later and may well be unaware of the injuries sustained by the other cyclist.

“Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and I am appealing to anyone who witnessed the crash or assisted either rider to come forward to speak with police.

“I particularly keen to speak the person who stopped and moved the injured riders pedal cycle to a place of safety.

“Anyone with information can contact police on 101 quoting incident number 2668 of Thursday, September 8, 2022,” police added.

Err, I have a question for Road.cc. Why does your headline make such an effort to differentiate an ebiker from someone riding a conventional bicycle? It's all cycling right? Surely you should have said that there was a collision between 2 cyclists. Yes, to refresh the memory of any potential witness you could usefully mention the fact that one was on an ebike. Mind you, the colour of the bike would have been just as useful.

Why have you answered your own question??

You think? I was referring to _the headline_ which explicitly tried to draw a distinction between 2 types of cyclist.

Because there is a quite obvious distinction between the two cycles. You should expect the distinction to be made rather than omitted. Imagine if it was a tricycle, a penny-farthing, a tandom, hand-cycle... it would be quite odd if that detail was omitted.

I can think of a couple of reasons. E-bikes are heavier, so collisions are likely to have poorer outcomes and e-bikes are on average going to be travelling faster, especially if they are de-restricted (don't know if this one was or not). The colour of a bike isn't going to affect a collision, so not really relevant.

However, I suspect it's just journalistic habit to include certain details in the headlines, such as the make of a car. It'd take more effort to specifically not mention that one vehicle was an e-bike.

I doubt that.

I notice more and more illegal ebikes when I'm out and about on my entirely legal one.   They range from hacked (otherwise legit) ones to entirely illegal ones doing 30+ while not being pedalled.

I have a friend who works for the DVSA who says that right now the whole issue of ebike (and escooter) legality is being assessed.

Expect changes to the law at some point.

Maybe they could add it into the comprehensive review of road law?

E-scooters were one of the starter items in the agenda of the Road Safety Investigation Branch as I recall.
