Lazer Electron 1 EC1

Lazer's Electron 1 EC1 glasses come with lenses for all conditions and their full-frame design looks good on the bike or off it.

There's a variety of different frame colours and lens options available. I had the Crystal Flash Yellow frames and a smoke lens pack that includes three lenses: a dark lens for sunlight, a sort of smoked yellow that's good in dull or variable conditions, and a clear lens for riding at night or in the rain.

The Electrons are a full frame so getting the lenses in and out requires a bit of bending and persuasion, but once you get the hang of it it's simple enough. The frames and lenses come with a moulded carry pack to keep everything in.

The bridge of the glasses is the only bit that isn't hard plastic – it has soft rubber sections for grip and comfort. They're not adjustable, but I found the fit of the Electrons pretty good, although for fast riding I'd have liked them to sit just a bit higher, as in a low position I sometimes found I was looking through the top of the frame. You can push them further up your nose to achieve that, but then I found they were too close to my eyes and my lashes brushed on the lenses. An adjustable bridge would help, but it wasn't a major issue.

The three lenses are good, optically. They're not top-drawer but there's not much obvious distortion and the three choices in the pack give you an option for every kind of weather. Like I said, if you don't think they'll suit then other options are available, including photochromics.

Point yourself up a steep hill and put a bit of effort in and the Lazers cope pretty well, with minimal fogging when you're moving. They're not vented, so sometimes they get a bit steamy, especially if you stop after a hard effort. The lenses can pick up sweat from your face if you're working hard, but they're not really any better or worse than my other sunnies in that regard.

Mostly my experience of the Electrons was good. They're a design that doesn't scream "BIKE!" when you're wearing them in your civvies, so they're more versatile than a set of half-frame riding glasses, but they still have the benefit of interchangeable lenses and a solid fit on the bike. The optics are good rather than crystal clear and the fit isn't adjustable, but for the money they're a good value package, and there are lots of frame and lens options available.
