At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

With everyday riding in mind, Cycology has nailed the comfort of its Fluoro Orange Socks. If you can deal with the bold colour schemes, these are a great addition to your wardrobe.

  • Pros: Comfortable, breathable and plenty of colour choices
  • Cons: Slight colour fading in the sun for the orange pair

The combination of 97 per cent nylon and 3 per cent Spandex creates a soft feeling sock, with no itching or irritation against the skin. The highly elastic material allows you to manoeuvre the material to the perfect position without worries of ripping the sock. The only small seams – across the top of the toes and around the heel – are smooth, adding to the comfort levels.

The 'ventilation panel' across the top of the foot allows quick moisture-wicking and keeps your feet cool in hot conditions. Be warned, though, on a cold day this does start to feel a little draughty and they're no substitute for winter socks.

The fit and sizing of the sock was perfect for me, with a skin-hugging fit without over-compression. The 15cm cuff created a tight fit, thanks to the mesh knit, keeping the sock firmly in place without the need for any added gripper material. A slight worry is the one-size-fits-all design and whether the same level of comfort would be felt by someone with significantly bigger feet than my measly UK size 7s.

I can't finish without talking about the colour. It's bright and personally I love it, but it's definitely not for everyone. If you're worried about clashing colours, don't panic... Cycology has eight colour choices, ranging from less vibrant options like black and white to some bright pink and yellow options. All have the same simple and clean design.

The only noticeable negative about the sock was a slight fading of the fluoro orange on the upper half of the sock. It's hard to know if it was caused by sun exposure or just general use, but the heel and inner of the sock have remained the original colour and noticeably different.

Finally, to touch on the price. At £10 a pair, the socks come up cheaper than many of the others we have tested here at road.cc such as the Sportful Bodyfit Team 15 socks and yet seem to hit many of the similar points. The half a star lower in score reflects the slight negative of the colour fade, but on the whole it competes well in the market. It's worth noting that the FLR Elite 3.5 socks are half the price, but personally I'd be willing to spend a little more for the design and colour of the Cycology Fluoro Orange Socks.

Tell us what the product is for

They're designed for your everyday riding with great ventilation and comfort allowing you to ride without issue.

Cycology says, "Our fluro orange logo cycling socks are made from a fabric that provides excellent moisture-wicking with mesh panels for ventilation, comfort & durability. Flat toe seam construction provides superior foot comfort. A more elastic knit keeps a snugger fit around the arch for good support and a mesh knit in the 6' (15cm) cuff keeps them firm but comfy.

"The bright colour will certainly stand out and combine nicely with many of our Cycology kits.

"These socks are so good, you'll want to wear them everywhere, every day. We have a colour option now for every day of the week!"

8/10

Well made socks on delivery. No signs of loose threads. Close up, the 'Cycology' logo is a little rough around the edges, but looks great from a normal viewing distance.

Rate the product for performance:

8/10

The moisture-wicking is quick thanks to the ventilation panel and the cuff stays up well with no discomfort. Not designed as an aero sock, so you won't get any 'performance' benefit, but the comfort allows you to stay out and keep riding.

Rate the product for durability:

6/10

Slight fading in the exposed upper half of the sock through sun exposure. Nothing significant to ruin the look of the sock, but the heel is now a stronger fluoro orange.

Rate the product for fit:

9/10

Great fit! Sits tight to your skin while remaining comfortable. The cuff stays in place well without slipping down.

Rate the product for sizing:

7/10

Personally the sizing was good, but I only have small feet. It's one size fits all, and I'm not sure how they'd perform for someone with feet double the size of mine.

Rate the product for comfort:

Very comfortable pair of socks for long rides and on all terrain.

Rate the product for value:

5/10

For the comfort levels and the bold look of the sock, you can somewhat justify the price, however they're still on the expensive side.

How easy is the product to care for? How did it respond to being washed?

Cleaned well in the wash on the whole. The colour seems to fade a little.

The early signs of colour fading for the upper half of the sock.

How does the price compare to that of similar products in the market, including ones recently tested on road.cc?

Cost less than many pairs on the market, but still not cheap – they're twice the price of the FLR Elite 3.5 socks for example.

They're a very good pair of socks for all types of riding. Well made, great bold colour (if that's what you like) and super-comfortable, but taking the minor colour fading and price into account I'd say they're not quite an 8, but a very good 7 overall.
