Well made and comfortable cycle cap with a patriotic design… better than a pair of Union Jack underpants

At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

The 'Union Jack' cycle cap is a new LMNH design, with the Union Flag on the sides and 'London' on the peak it's a cycle specific way to show where your allegiances might lie this Summer.

You could do worse than wear it when Bradley pulls on yellow in Paris* and continue to wear it on Box Hill to cheer our boys as they romp up the pimple of a climb in the big ring and then jubilantly throw it in the air when Cav streaks home to cruise to victory on The Mall**.

Aesthetics aside it's your standard issue cotton cycle-cap, the peak keeps the sun out your eyes, and more importantly, the rain, and it stops sweat stinging down. The fit is snug without being tight so you can wear it on it's own without it flipping off to flutter under a bus, it doesn't shrink half a size in the wash to give you a headache every time you wear it afterwards, and the peak hasn't bent or wrinkled. It's a good cycle-cap.

*If you have a time machine.

**Maybe.

Verdict

It's a cycle-cap, it's patriotically branded with a reference to some large sporting event happening in the capital. As a cycling cap it's well made and comfortable, the design is going to be a personal thing but it's better than a pair of Union Jack underpants.

Make and model: Look Mum No Hands Union Jack Hat

Size tested: Union Jack

Tell us what the product is for, and who it's aimed at. What do the manufacturers say about it? How does that compare to your own feelings about it?

It's a cycle cap for people that like to wear cycle caps. Whether that's under a helmet for sun/ rain protection and to look Pro or without a helmet to look rakish and hipster cool in blatant disregard to Rule #22, or just because they have a thing for cycle-caps.

I like cycle-caps, but the design of this one isn't my thing, the fit's nice though.

As caps go, it's a good 'un.

The fit.

Tell us what you particularly disliked about the product

The 'London' thing might get a bit old pretty quickly, unless you live in London.

Did you enjoy using the product? Yes, it's a good cap.

Would you consider buying the product? Not really, I'm not that flag-wavey about the whole London thing, but don't let me put you off. I'd happily buy one of the other LMNH caps that was more my style though.

Would you recommend the product to a friend? Yes.

Jo Burt has spent the majority of his life riding bikes, drawing bikes and writing about bikes. When he's not scribbling pictures for the whole gamut of cycling media he writes words about them for road.cc and when he's not doing either of those he's pedaling. Then in whatever spare minutes there are in between he's agonizing over getting his socks, cycling cap and bar-tape to coordinate just so. And is quietly disappointed that yours don't He rides and races road bikes a bit, cyclo-cross bikes a lot and mountainbikes a fair bit too. Would rather be up a mountain.

I'd like to say:

You are wearing that hat well.

You'd like to say it... but you can't quite bring yourself to say it, right? Ha-ha!
