At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

The Giro Peloton cap is a light polyester cap that performs well in warm weather, but it comes at a price.

I quite like the idea of wearing a cap under my helmet. It looks pro, for a start, and it's pretty handy for keeping the sun and rain out of your eyes. I've struggled with cotton ones - I find them too bulky, and they soak with sweat or rain pretty easily too.

The Peloton cap is made from the same type of wicking polyester fabric as a jersey. That means it's thinner and more flexible than a cotton cap, and I found it to be noticeably more comfortable under a helmet. It wicks fairly effectively too so it's better in the heat than a cotton cap, although it's not so windproof and won't keep you as warm when the temperature drops.

It's still another layer, albeit a thin one, so it will help a bit. I've found it good for chilly autumn mornings, but the depths of winter will probably require something a bit more substantial.

The fact that it's jersey fabric means it's easier to snag than cotton, so beware if you have any exposed velcro inside your helmet from missing pads. The peak is fairly short but enough for a bit of shade or rain protection, and, well, that's about it. I've enjoyed using the Peloton cap; it's a comfortable cap that doesn't get too hot in summer and is warm enough for spring and autumn too.

The main sticking point is the price. £25 is a fair wedge; it's the same price as a Rapha cap and more than double a cheap-but-perfectly decent Prendas one, for example. If, like me, you like the idea of wearing a cap but don't really get on with a cotton one, or you want something for the warmer months, then it's well worth considering.

Verdict

Comfortable polyester cap with good wicking properties. The price is a bit salty though.

Tell us what the product is for, and who it's aimed at. What do the manufacturers say about it? How does that compare to your own feelings about it?

A light, cool and comfortable cap for warmer, longer rides The Peloton Cap might be the most versatile accessory a rider can have on a warm day. It provides a bit of shade from the sun, a layer of insulation when it's cool or windy, and it wicks sweat when the heat rises too. Designed to be warn under a helmet, it is thin enough to fit without bunching and light enough to practically disappear when you put it on. We've also shortened the brim compared to some caps, for better upper peripheral vision when riding in the drops.

If anyone else is doing a sharp intake of breath at the price, Walz make a wicking cap too, which comes in at £15.
